"Thank you. Today, I have the honor of presenting on Women's History Month. And I am going to celebrate someone who's in my region of Illinois, just a huge role model and has had a huge impact. I have the honor of introducing former Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner-Kersee for her accomplishments both on and off the field. Jackie Joyner-Kersee is regarded by many as the greatest female athlete of all time. She's the first woman to win back-to-back gold medals in the heptathlon, 10300020.docx 3 STATE OF ILLINOIS 103rd GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 20th Legislative Day 3/10/2023 the first woman to score 7 thousand points in the heptathlon, and the first African American woman to win an Olympic medal in the long jump. She was born and raised in East St. Louis. Her athletic career began in high school, where she qualified for the finals in the long jump at the 1980 Olympic Trials and received a scholarship to go to UCLA. At UCLA, she competed on the track and field and women's baseball teams. There, she won the Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation's best female collegiate athlete and the Broderick Award twice as the nation's best female collegiate track and field competitor. While attending UCLA, she competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics and won the silver in the heptathlon. In the 1988 Summer Olympics, she became the first American woman to earn a gold medal in the long jump and the first American woman to earn a gold medal in a heptathlon. Throughout her career, she competed in a total of four Olympic Games, and won six Olympic medals. She holds a multitude of track and field records, setting the heptathlon world record three times. But Jackie didn't stop there. She returned to East St. Louis and established the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, which provides academic support, after school programs, food, and transportation to local youth. The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation is a safe space and learning-rich environment where young people are empowered to succeed no matter what their circumstance are. Between her tremendous athletic accomplishments and her service and dedication to the youth of East St. Louis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee is an inspiration to young women across Illinois and beyond. "I would just like to add to Jackie Joyner-Kersee with Representative Stuart said. I'm always looking for an excuse to talk about Special Olympics. And she has been a great advocate, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, for Special Olympics. And actually, I had the privilege of having a heptathlon international Special Olympic athlete set the world's record for the heptathlon points from my district. And the young lady had the opportunity to meet Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and the young lady from my district actually had a street named after her as a Special Olympian. So, again, Jackie Joyner Kersee's been a tremendous advocate for Special Olympians, not only throughout the State of Illinois, the United States, and the world. So, we appreciate that also. And so, I just wanted to give a shoutout to her and her appreciation and recognition for what she has done for Special Olympians. Thank you."
