Members of the body, I rise today to recognize and remember a great man, someone who contributed so much to my community of Bloomington-Normal and McLean County, Richard 'Dick' Kellerhals. Dick passed away last week… Dick passed away last week at the age of 96. He was a 71-year member of Laborers' Local 362, still regularly attending monthly meetings. He was also a U.S. Army veteran stationed in Italy and then in Japan as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. Dick had a strong commitment to service. He pushed Local 362 to be involved in the community and to give back through their labor, contributing to projects at various organizations throughout Bloomington-Normal. On a personal note, he was always very kind to me and very warm whenever I saw him. He had a very sweet composure and was seen as a father figure to many and cared so deeply for his adopted family of Local 362. I've introduced House Resolution 335 and will be presenting a copy of the resolution to Local 362 at their meeting next month. We will miss him dearly. His visitation is tonight and interment is tomorrow. And one of his pieces of advice that I think many of us can relate to here is, 'Keep smiling, and save your money.' These are mostly stories of success, but also tales of great sacrifice, like the tragedy of the Cherry Mine disaster, when almost 80 Italians perished. It is still a very touching experience to walk through, and I was there, what is called the 'Death Row' in Cherry, which is the row of houses where Italian widows lived in a life… lived a life of pain and sad recollections after the passing away of their husbands. But looking at present time, Illinois continues to attract fellow Italians, businessmen, scientists, researchers, restaurateurs, students, artists, all living testimonies to the resilience and richness of the dialogue and cooperation between Italy and Illinois. Illinois is the fourth importer in the U.S. of Italian products in mechanics, advanced manufacturing, energy, and aerospace sectors, and the third importer of Italian products in the life sciences and chemistry sector. We have around 140 companies, Italian-owned or Italian- participated, employing almost 5,000 workers with a turnover of over $2 billion. Last 22nd of April, the consulate general organized a symposium on quantum science and technology with the contribution of the most relevant figures within the quantum ecosystem in Italy and in the Midwest, with a specific focus on the development of the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park, currently underway with a strong support by the Illinois government. Also, in April, we inaugurated at the Art Institute of Chicago a unique exhibition of the Torlonia Collection of ancient Roman marbles and statues, the most extensive private collection of this kind in the world. Tourism both ways is growing steadily, with more and more Americans choosing Italy as their main tourist destination. It was… originally came over and was a gut and replace to deal with the language pertaining to the content test and the removal of the content test the first few years. And then we had to come back to committee last week to reinstate the original language to the bill due to some errors on the Senate side that allowed the state superintendent to designate any regional office of education or intermediate service center as a learning partner in any iteration of the statewide system of support. It is actually the same bill from House language 1869, which passed unanimously on this side but, unfortunately, didn't make it through on the other side."
