Joining us now in Illinois, Consul General Cahalane is entrusted with a special bond between Ireland and Illinois, a kinship formed over generations of immigration, trade, common cause, and mutual affinity. When our… when the Irish government opened our embassy in D.C. in 1924, I wonder if they would ever have imagined where we are today, with consulates in eight locations, embracing the full diversity and richness of the U.S. The breadth and depth of our connection was on display last March when eight government ministers traveled to the United States, and there can be no closer friend to Ireland than the United States. And in these United States, there can be no more better friend and partner to Ireland than the State of Illinois. It was an invite from Chicago that catalyzed the first official visit of the leader of an independent Ireland to the United States when W.T. Cosgrave arrived in 1928. Countless Irish government representatives have followed by traveling to Chicago's St. Patrick's Day parade and… and here to Springfield also. We need only look to the level of engagement between Ireland and Illinois this year to see the vitality of our relationship. Already in 2025, Illinois has welcomed a past Irish president, Mary Robinson, in early March. Over St. Patrick's weekend, Ireland's minister for health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, visited Chicago and met with Governor Pritzker, Mayor Johnson, and business and community leaders. Almost 10% of the American population identifies as Irish American, more than 32 million people whose ancestors, like St. Patrick himself, had their story of emigration, of leaving their homeland in search of opportunity, and this flow of people has shaped and forged Ireland as it has shaped and forged America. But it is not just the stories of our people that intertwine, it is flows of ideas and of values that have forged a deep and strong connection between Ireland and the United States. And it's upon this solid foundation that we have built a modern partnership to the mutual benefit of both our peoples, those in Cork City as much as in Chicago, in Joliet as much as in Galway, in Strabane as much as in Springfield. At a time of significant turbulence in the global trading environment, it is important to remember that Ireland and the U.S. have a significant and mutually beneficial economic relationship. Our overall economic relationship is valued at more than $1 trillion. Ireland is the sixth largest source of foreign direct investment into the U.S., with investment by Irish companies worth more than $350 billion. There are 950 U.S. companies invested in Ireland, 50 from the Chicagoland area alone, a striking figure made all the more striking for Ireland's size. We're only half the size of Illinois and have a population similar to Cook County. The Midwest is home to over 100 Irish companies employing 24,000 people across sectors including agriculture, food and beverage, information technology, life sciences, and manufacturing. Irish companies employ close to 7,000 people in over 60 locations right across the State of Illinois, many no doubt in your districts. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your work, for the opportunity for growth that Illinois provides to these Irish companies. The State of Illinois, your excellent schools, and hardworking Illinoisans allow Irish companies grow and expand into the U.S. market and with it give back to the cities and communities that they invest in. We need to see an urgent return to diplomatic and political pathways to end the current cycle of violence. This year, the Lady Panthers finished the season with an extraordinary record of, y'all listen to this, 33 wins and only two losses. In fact, no other school in the history of Chicago City Colleges men's or women's program has ever recorded more than 30 wins in a single season. The Lady Panthers secured victories in the City Colleges Conference Championship, the NJCAA Regional 4 Division Championship, and the NJCAA District 13 Division Championship. These hard-fought wins earned them a spot in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament as one of the top 24 junior colleges in the entire nation. Their incredible success was a true team effort, powered in large by the exceptional contributions of three standout sophomores: Nakia Bardney, named Regional Player of the Year, y'all give a round of applause for Nakia; All-American candidate Khaniah Gardner; and… and NJCAA All-Regional 4 selection and All- American candidate Cashay Dixon, also an All-Region 4 honoree and All-American candidate. Their achievements were guided by exemplary leadership from their coach, Jeff Dillard Jr., who was honored as Coach of the Year for both NJCAA Region 4 and NJCAA District 13, along with his dedicated coaching staff.
