Sadly, Tomato passed away last week. I wanted to share a few words today about this very special guy. Tomato was an extraordinary person. Why? Because he was one of the nicest, kindest, happiest, most positive person… people I have ever met, and everyone who knew him agreed. His obituary was right on in describing him as having the softest heart, the funniest stories. As I was thinking about what remarks I would make today, I asked some friends how they would describe him, and the same theme emerged: such a good guy, always happy, a heart of gold, honest, loyal, always a smile on his face, everyone's best friend, could talk to anyone, genuine, lit up a room, full of love, full of life, never knew a stranger. You get the picture. When I was a young staffer, I had a great group of friends I palled around with, many of whom had been working in around the Capitol for many years. Tomato was one of them. I don't remember exactly how I met Tomato, but we were instantly friends. For me, it was always a wonderful time and made the time away from home a little bit easier. After a night out, Tomato and his friends would invariably end up sitting around a kitchen table late into the night, playing music, arguing about nonsense, telling stories, telling more stories, and laughing. Often, something crazy would happen in those nights, and then boom, another story would be developed and be told again and again. One night, we decided we wanted to do something special for Tomato because it was never about him. So, we planned a surprise birthday party at a Springfield restaurant. We made this cutout, featuring Tomato as a much younger man, got balloons, party favors, the whole thing. And for once, we made it all about him. He hated the attention, but he loved it. When his mother passed away, in true Tomato fashion, he invited all of us to celebrate her life at the pub he owned in Carlinville called Ryan's Pub. We rented a limo, all trekked out there for the night, and had a great time. We didn't know Mrs. Ryan, but we all loved Tomato, so we were there for him. And what a celebration it was. Tomato loved being a father and was so proud of his two boys, Josh… Josh and Jordan Ryan. Jordan, you may know, he was on staff and is now a lobbyist. He's with us today in the gallery. You may know him, if you don't know him as Jordan, as TK, which of course stands for 'Tomato's Kid.' He is listed in my phone to this day as TK. Last weekend, I was knocking on doors like I always do, to listen, to see what people are going through, and I met a man who drives for Uber. He lives in Gage Park in Chicago with his wife and two kids. He's in his 50s. The kind of man who works quietly, who helps his neighbors. The kind of man who believes that if you do things right, you'll be left in peace. It's a little bit old school. But a few nights ago in Waukegan, he was surrounded by masked ICE agents, three guns pointed at his face, screaming at him. They ordered him to show his papers, his Social Security card… card, as if he… his life needed proof. He told me, 'I wasn't scared for me. And for those wondering, yes, he was a U.S. citizen. Somewhere along the line, we let mass cowards with big guns and small hands terrorize our neighborhoods and abduct people in the dead of night. While their groupies record it like it's a music video, we allow them to drag parents from their homes, to make zip-tied children watch in terror, and fire chemical agents outside of schools and senior centers, kill, and then lie about it. In my neighborhood, that fear is the air we breathe. Parents are too afraid to drive their kids to school. Teenagers are missing class to work because their mom can't risk leaving the house. Houses that go quiet when they hear the whistles outside. The empty chair at dinner because dad didn't come home. This is what it feels like when machinery of government turns on its own people, Black, Brown, Asian, young or old, immigrant or U.S. citizen. They don't care. They're coming after all of us. On Monday, Tom announced his retirement from WJPF News Radio after nearly… nearly 50 years on the air. For decades, Tom has been the familiar voice that so many of us have woken up to, delivering the news, interviews, and the stories that shape our communities. He began his career back in 1976, the year I graduated high school, as a music DJ, and before long he found his calling in journalism and public service through radio. As host of the WJPF Morning News Watch, Tom became more than a broadcaster. He became a trusted voice for Southern Illinois. He served a program… he served as program director for WJPF and WCIL-AM, operations manager for River Radio and its six stations. And under his leadership, WJPF earned awards from the Illinois Broadcasters Association for the Station of the Year and Best Public Service Program. Tom's outstanding work has also been recognized beyond the studio. He received the Leaders Among Us Award from the Southern Illinoisan and the Seven Seals Award from the Illinois National Guard for his support of local service members. Despite his success, Tom has always been known for his humility.
