Lenard, former State Representatives from the Riverdale neighborhood and a former chief bailiff for the City of Chicago, passed away on January 23, 1983 at the age of 79; 8 STATE OF ILLINOIS 83RD GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 13th Legislative Day February 24, 1983 and whereas, Mr. Lenard was first elected to the Illinois House of Representatives from the far south side district in 1952 and served his constituents and the state with great distinction for 20 years until his retirement in 1972; and whereas, during his term of office, Mr. Lenard was a strong supporter of job problems for his district and thought to enact legislation requiring a federal permit to dump materials into Lake Michigan; and whereas, Mr. Lenard was capable and honest in his tenacious work as a Member of the House contributed greatly to the accomplishments of the Legislative Body; and whereas, Mr. Lenard became a municipal court bailiff in 1936 and was named bailiff in 1964 and held that position until he retired in 1972; and whereas, Mr. Lenard was a Silver Skate ice skating champion of Chicago and began a professional boxing career in 1919 and fought until 1932; and whereas, he participated in 142 fights. He won 132, and was never knocked out and was often called the 'uncrowned bantamweight champion of the world'; and whereas, Mr. Lenard was the boxing coach for the St. Michael's Boys Club and the U. S. Steel Boxing Club of the Catholic Youth Organization. Therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the 83rd General Assembly of the State of Illinois, that we mark with sorrow the death of former Representative Henry M. Lenard, that the loss of this fine man will be sorely missed by his community and that we convey our deepest sympathy to his loving wife, Peggy; his two sons, Henry and Raymond; his daughter, Dorothy Nelson; and a brother, a sister, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. I remember back in 1969, as President of the Student Body at SIU, Mr. Lenard invited me here to speak to this Body. He said, 'Here is a future Member of this Body'. He was the first man to call me when I won my election back home. He consistently urged many of us young people to get involved in the political process. In my home district, as well as in the State of Illinois, Henry Lenard will be sorely but lovingly missed. In closing, I remember one is his quotes that he used to say when he spoke in public. 'I love politics, but I like boxing better, because at least in the ring, I knew who was hitting me.' Thank you."
