"Just this past week a man from Harrisburg Pennsylvania was appointed Bishop of Baltimore, his name is Bishop Keller and it's significant that he was appointed to Baltimore this past week, and I have just a little history about the prayer that I am going to use today. Baltimore was the...made the first diocese in the United States on November 7, 1789. When the United States Hyarchy was established, on April 8, 1808 it was made the first diocese in the United States, Archbishop John Carroll was the countries first Bishop. And the prayer that I'm going to use today is a prayer for the civil authorities of our country which was written by Archbishop Carroll, adapted to the needs of today. We pray You almighty and eternal God who through Jesus Christ has revealed Your Glory to all nations to preserve the works of Your mercy here in our land. We pray thee, Oh God of might, wisdom and justice through whom authorities rightly administered, laws are enacted and judgements decreed, assist with the Holy Spirit of council and fortitude. The President of the United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness and be eminently useful to the people over whom he precides. By encouraging do respect for virtue and religion, by a faithful execution of laws, in justice and mercy and by restraining vice immorality.
