"House Resolution 666, offered by Representative Shaw and others, WHEREAS, The State of Israel has consistently worked to facilitate the immigration of Jews from all over the world, and "Operation Solomon" is the latest of several efforts to extricate Jews from Ethiopia; and WHEREAS, Concerted efforts to bring the Ethiopian Jews "home" began with "Operation Moses", an operation which transported seven thousand Jews from Ethiopia to Israel in 1984; through the subsequent "Operation Queen of Sheba" eight hundred additional Ethiopian Jews were brought to Israel before mass immigration was halted; and WHEREAS, Operation Solomon, under the command of Major General Amnon Shahak, airlifted 14,450 stranded Jews on forty flights between Addis Ababa and Ben Gurion Airport in Israel with thirty-five aircraft being used in the operation; and WHEREAS, Approximately three thousand Jews and former Jews that have converted to Christianity failed to make it to Addis Ababa and remain in Ethiopia; and WHEREAS, The magnitude of the evacuation again illustrates the lengths to which the Jewish people will go to "rescue their own", no matter where or under what circumstances those emancipations must take place; and WHEREAS, Jews and Blacks have faced similar prejudices throughout the ages and their common battles have helped them to forge coalitions on various issues; and WHEREAS, Because these groups have fought side-by-side for solutions to employment, housing, education, and religious prejudice, it is fitting that the State of Israel has taken 16 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 62nd Legislative Day June 5, 1991 such extraordinary efforts to welcome Ethiopian Jews into the Jewish community; therefore be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EIGHTY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, Israel's Ambassador to Ethiopia Asher Naim, Major General Amnon Shahak, and Operation Solomon Coordinator Uri Lubrani and urge their continued efforts to bring home all remaining Jews and their families from Ethiopia; and be it further RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this preamble and resolution be presented to Prime Minister Shamir, Ambassador Asher Naim, Major General Shahak, and Coordinator Uri Lubrani as an expression of our deep respect and esteem.

I rise in support of Representative Shaw's Resolution, and I...would like to thank and commend Representative Shaw for introducing this...meaningful and timely Resolution. What this Resolution pertains to...is the operation by the State of Israel to save thousands and thousands, now some 14,000, Ethiopian Jews who were looking for an escape to freedom, and what the State of Israel did was to airlift 14,000 Ethiopian Jews, many of them in a very...having lived in a very primitive society, and airlifted them to the State of Israel and, prior to being permitted to do this, the outgoing government of Ethiopia demanded a ransom...a 17 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 62nd Legislative Day ransom of $35,000,000 before June 5, 1991 they would let the...these Ethiopians leave their country, leave the civil strife and the famine in that country to be taken to freedom . This ransom was demanded and the next day within 24 hours the State of Israel deposited $35,000,000, as was demanded, in a New York bank to permit these Ethiopians to escape their plight and be brought to the land of Israel and to be given at great cost and effort of the Israeli government, housing, education for their children, clothing and...employment opportunities...as well as training in the language and so on, and this was gladly done once again because, as the Resolution said and as Representative Shaw said out in the Resolution, this has always been the State of Israel's and the Jewish people's prime concern and responsibility is to save their own, to...bring captives to freedom, and I think this...again is a very timely, well-thought-out Resolution, and I'm very happy to...be voting in favor of it."

I, too, rise in support of Representative Shaw's...Resolution as a Co-Sponsor, and, let me tell you, for those of you who have never traveled to Israel, Israel's a very small country and has a lot of its own problems at the present time, and for Israel to make that commitment at this time and to take 14,000 people, I think this is a major, major thing for them to do in that country. Israel's been faced with many of its own problems but they were committed to this program and, as Representative Shaw indicates, they completed this program, and I'm happy to stand here in support of this Resolution."

As a Member of the Holy Land Fellowship of Christians and Jews, I am in deep admiration of the State of Israel's action in this situation and of their abiding commitment to bringing the Jewish people home to the State of Israel from wherever they might be persecuted. It was a tremendous act of unselfish love and one that we can all admire, and I appreciate the Gentlemen offering this Resolution so that we in the Illinois House can do so officially. Thank you."
