WHEREAS, The members of this body and the citizens of the State of Illinois have shown concern and support for the brave men and women who risked their lives in our armed forces; and WHEREAS, It is a grateful country that welcomes back the men and women who have gone into harm's way in order that freedom and justice might not perish from the earth; and WHEREAS, Those who handle the trauma and casualties of war perform a task of significant importance in the preservation of 2 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 61st Legislative Day our freedom and way of life; and June 4, 1991 WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure and pride that we welcome Sergeant Mary Leone on her return from the Persian Gulf; and WHEREAS, Mary Leone is the only employee of the General Assembly who actually served in Desert Storm; she originally joined the Army in February, 1981, while she was in high school; she received basic training in Missouri and advanced training in Oklahoma in September of 1981; she was stationed in Germany for three years active duty as part of the 72nd Riflery Brigade; and WHEREAS, A member of the 92nd Medical Battalion of the Army Reserve, Mary Leone was activated two days before Thanksgiving of 1990 and left Springfield for Fort Sheridan on the day after Thanksgiving for duty in Rihayd, Saudi Arabia; and WHEREAS, Mary has one son, Jesse, who is six years old and will be promoted to the second grade on June 4; Jesse saw his mom on May 29, 1991, for the first time since December 2, 1990 when his guardians took him to meet his mom's unit when they arrived at Fort Sheridan, north of Chicago; and now that they are back together, Jesse hopes to teach his mom to ride a two wheel bicycle since Jesse learned to ride his bike without the training wheels while his mom was gone; and WHEREAS, During the war, Sergeant Leone, a single parent, exchanged letters and pictures regularly with her son, family, friends, and co-workers in the states; she described her job during the war with the following words: "Since the war has begun, we have been on full alert and have been attacked nearly every night with Scud Missiles...... My job is to plot incoming Scuds that may have chemicals, so that when we dispatch our ambulances, we will know if the area is contaminated. I send out chemical downwind messages and weather reports and help dispatch 3 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 61st Legislative Day June 4, 1991 ambulances...... When the ground war starts, I may be going with our chemical officer to a decon site to decontaminate casualties"; and WHEREAS, Because of security purposes, no packages could be sent or delivered to the Persian Gulf during the war; however, the day that security was lifted, Mary called with a special order licorice, three bottles of hair color gel, the latest Soap Opera Digest, the National Enquirer, and Cosmopolitan; and WHEREAS, Mary, a secretary for Speaker Madigan's Issues Development Staff, said she will never complain about her civilian job again; "Any day in Springfield is better than the best day in Saudi Arabia"; upon returning to the United States, Sergeant Leone said the best sight next to seeing family and friends was seeing the green grass and trees of Illinois; therefore be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EIGHTY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we honor Mary Ann Leone for her excellent service to Illinois and her country during Operation Desert Storm; we commend her for her unselfish attitude and willingness to answer her nation's call; and we offer our thanks to her family, friends, and co-workers who managed her affairs, cared for her son, took extra assignments at work, wrote letters, and prayed daily for her safe return; and be it further RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this preamble and resolution be presented to Sergeant Mary Ann Leone as an expression of our deep respect and admiration and with our sincere wishes for health and happiness in the future.

I think Minnie, who as you know and many of the Members here know, died about three years ago. Minnie would be looking down upon you now and really proud.
