We had a skin game, and we were on a particular par-four and one of us had a good drive, and the second shot...dne of us knocked it in the hole for an eagle, and al1 four of us were jumping up and down in the fairway, and slapping hands, and we knew we had won the skins, and there was no way that you would have known that Horace Calvo was a Justice of the Illinois Supreme Courts, the post unpretentious man that you'd ever met. I was out with him New Year's Eve with his wife and my wife. We stayed out late, laughing and drinking and dancing and had a great time, and there was no way that anyone, of the 500 people the room that night would have known, that this was a Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. He was an extremely unpretentious man, but he was extremely proud to be a Supreme Court Judge. He couldn't believe that, from his humble beginnings, he rose as a State Legislator, first as a lawyer and then a lawyer for the steelworkers, and then a State Representative, and then a Circuit Judge in Madison County, and then appointed to the Appellate Bench, and then elected to (sic the) Supreme Court. He couldn't get over the fact that he sat on the Supreme Court. He wanted to talk; he wanted to socialize; he wanted to politic. think the only tbing he did. not like about being on the Supreme Court was that he was precluded from socializing as much as he wanted to, but he lived his whole life for his...for his job, for his community, for his family and for those things he cherished most in his life, and that was the respect that those people that grew up with him and served with him , and those people tbat be represented. We certainly are goin: to miss Horace; he's a great guy. never knew him as a Legislator; I...hardly knew him as a Judge. I simply knew him as a friend, and we miss him.'' I'm one of the iew left around here who served with Horace Calvo, and what the other speakers have said is exactly true. When I came here as a freshman, was appointed to the Cities and Villages Committee. Horace served on that committee, and he was kind to me from day one. He was gregarious, he was affable and a gentleman, and, if my memory serves me correctly: Horace was down here last January for the inauguration and sweartng in of new Members, and as Jim Mcpike has said so eloquently, Horace had not changed one bit. He was a fine man that you could always look up to and consider a friend, and he was especially kind to new young Members like me, and these are the kind of things that we will always remember. Prior to that, hadn't met Horace, but we saw each other...many things together, many Democratic functions. We spent a lot of time on the campaign trail together, and this was a gentleman who was running for the Supreme Court of the State of Illinois. He was pulled in every direction, but he took time out to help a z6-year-old. He took time out to introduce me to his friends in Collinsville, his friends in Caseyville , his friends throughout the Metro East area.
