Death Resolution of a Former Member..."
"House Resolution 1684, offered by Representative Daniels; WHEREAS, the members of this assembly were saddened to learn of the death of one of its distinguished colleagues, Myron J. Olson, on January 25, 1992, who proudly served in the Illinois House of Representatives for 11 years and whose presence will be greatly missed in this chamber; and WHEREAS, as a Deputy House Minority Leader of the Republican caucus and a dedicated public servant, Myron brought distinction to this body and to the people of the 70th District whom he proudly represented; and WHEREAS, Myron brought to this chamber not only a common sense approach to public service, but will also be remembered for his own unique charm and wit; and WHEREAS, Myron was highly regarded as a sergeant with the United States Army Signal Intelligence in Japan, and later as Lee County Circuit Court Clerk, a post he held from 1976 until his appointment to the Illinois House in 1981; and WHEREAS, his knowledge of local government administration enabled Myron to make significant legislative contributions to improve the efficiency and accountability of local government operations, and his expertise in Illinois election law was well-known and highly respected in Illinois political circles; and WHEREAS, Myron, a native of neighboring Wisconsin, was an unrepentant Packer Backer and Brew Crew 16 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 follower, but he never let those loyalties get in the way of annual House debate over the fortunes of the Cubs, Cardinals or Bears; and WHEREAS, Myron was never at a loss for a story to tell or a joke to pass along, and his many acts of kindness will be remembered with great affection by all those who worked with him; and WHEREAS, Myron was a highly effective legislator who had an uncanny ability to bring opposing factions together and draw a common bridge of understanding between people, in even the most difficult situations; and WHEREAS, Myron, as a devoted husband, made it his practice to call his wife Rosemary first thing every morning while he was in Springfield; and WHEREAS, Myron will be missed by not only the members of this chamber, his family and friends, but all citizens of Illinois; therefore be it RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE EIGHTY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we hereby express our deep gratitude for Myron J. "Madam Speaker and Members of the House. I am going to miss Myron Olson. I am going to miss him for the variety of reasons and losing a personal friend who is colleague, losing an advisor, losing somebody that I think so many times over a kind of day that he would start why Myron 17 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 Olson was part of the leadership on this side of the aisle and I don't think that if you spend anytime just giving that a little bit of thought you'd have any trouble understanding why he was a leader in the General Assembly because I think if you were in a position where you could appoint him to a leadership position you would have done the same thing. 'Cause he started his day every day in his office and knew know where he wanted to be in the Stratton Building, he wanted to be with the Members and when he came in to talk to me and say 'You know Lee, I think I can help you on the Republican side and I think I help you as one of the assistant leaders and if you do, do this I wanna be over in the Stratton Building, I want to sit with the Members and talk to them and find out what's going on to see how their doing to make sure that they hear from me what the leadership is concerned about and then they can talk to me and tell me what their concerns are and every day he did that. And every day he started with a joke and every day he started with a smile on his face and a new challenge. Remember? Those of us that have worked with him for so many years, really was a delight and the more you got to know Myron Olson the more you found out about him the more you respected him and the more you realized the substance of the person that we were afforded the opportunity to share such a small time with him. His service in the military which he didn't speak about to much until you kind of brought it out of him and a matter of fact how many times did you really hear Myron talking about himself, not a lot because he is usually is concerned about somebodyelse or their thoughts or had an idea on how he could stick it to the other side of the aisle, he'd tell us. I don't know how many times that worked, at least he 18 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 had those ideas and was bringing them to us and you know when I got the call that Myron was gone it kind of was the time where you sat down and you reflected upon what your role is and what it means to go on, what it means to go on without a valued friend or a colleague or a person that (sic-who) you relied upon so much. And then you start realizing, I am really going to miss this guy. He really meant a lot to me, and I only hope, I only hope that Myron Olson knew how much he meant to all of us in this organization and to the people of Illinois 'cause if he knew that, then I think some of our roles and responsibility to our fellow colleagues was fulfilled. When I went to his wake and talked to Rosemary, I was struck upon her strength and her ability to handle such a traumatic event, and she said to me, 'I am going to miss him a lot, but we've had a great life together. And they did have a great life together. A life of a...admiration and love, a life of sharing and, yes, a life that they were looking to a great future together, now which has been cut short and all too short, but one that has served us and the people of Illinois in such a high fashion that he only deserves our complete ad...admiration and love and respect. And I guess as I look upon Myron's background, I...I...there is some inconsistencies, like I don't how a man as great as he was could've been a Green Bay Packer's fan or a- what do we call it? A Milwaukee Brewer follower, a Brew Crew follower. But I guess once we understood Myron we knew that he was a man to all the people. I will miss Myron. I will miss his jokes. I'll miss his counsel. I'll miss his friendship. And yes, I'll miss his warmth. "Thank you very much, Madam Speaker, and Ladies and Gentlemen of the House. As we look back, I think we can all appreciate the fact that the 87th General Assembly has lost two of its best and brightest Members, one in August and one in January. Richard Mautino and Myron Olson will be sorely missed by all of us in this Body and they'll be especially missed by the people they represented so effectively and that they represented with such a special style, and I guess it's that style that may very well be irreplaceable. That they will be missed by their family and many, many friends goes without saying. You know, Myron was a person of great integrity, eager to help any Member of this chamber, especially eager to help any resident of the State of Illinois or particularly his district. I think what I will always remember is that Myron took the process here very seriously, but he had a very special knack for not taking himself or any individual here too seriously. You know, Myron could always be counted on to bring his unique perspective to an issue, to use his good will and his sense of humor. Oh, what a sense of humor he had and how we will miss it, and he often used that sense of humor to keep us all on track. Because he was such a decent man and SO grounded in solid common sense, he could often bring about a reasonable compromise on the many issues that so often seem to divide us down here. Yes, we're going to miss Myron Olson, and this chamber is going to miss him. I think all of our lives will be a little less full and a heck of a lot less fun by his absence because they were made so much more full by his presence. Myron will, to me, always represent what is good and decent about pursuing a career in public service. He did his job, he did it very well and he did it with a very special flair. He was a special friend to me, a special person to all of us. I extend my condolences to his wife, Rosemary, and to his family. I extend my condolences to all of us. "Madam Speaker, from this side of the aisle, Myron's passing ought to tell us how much each of us mean to each other. The fact is...that and I think both the drafter of that Resolution and Lee and Bill really have highlighted Myron's life-and the fact of the matter is that every morning Myron was one of the first ones here on the floor of the House and some of us, as close as we are to each other, don't cross the aisle enough times. Myron crossed the aisle every morning and came over on this side of the aisle and had a joke or had a story to tell and then he went over to his side of the aisle. Later that day he would come over again. He was always on this side of the aisle and as Bill said, 'He treated serious matters, seriously,' but sometimes when things are very serious we needed a guy like Myron to lighten the load. He did that very often and that's so important in this tough business, in this tough legislative process. Myron did have a unique way about him. He was somebody that you couldn't dislike. You had to just love the guy. My condolences and from everybody on this side of the aisle to his wife and his family." "Madam Speaker, Myron Olson was one of the finest persons I've ever met. He was a delight to serve with, and I think Representative Matijevich was absolutely correct. You didn't know he was a Republican when he was talking to you because he...he worked on the issues. He was even-handed. He was a delight to be with, and I got to know him over the extended period of time that we served together on the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, and he had an idea in terms of how that committee ought to run, in ought to run in a fair and a bipartisan way, and there were times where...he was much more conservative than I was, but we were in agreement on the vast majority of things in terms of that committee needed to be run in a proper and in a fair way. He was a delight to know. He has been very, very helpful to me in terms of my career over the years...I had talked to him just a couple days before he passed away, and I was...shocked in terms of his passing. We will, I think, all miss him. He is clearly somebody who contributed greatly to this legislative Body and my condolences to his wife." Speaker Jones, L.: "Representative Ropp."
"Thank you, Madam Speaker and Members of the House. I guess it is not often that you can really say that you really have a true, true friend. I think to all of us Myron was that typical example, a guy who you could really say anything that you had on your mind. I f you had a personal problem, be it a family problem or be it a 22 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 political problem, and you could feel that Myron would with his utmost integrity keep that to himself, but also attempt to resolve any problems that you may have.. Any number of times we would communicate by telephone with a red-hot story that we heard and I miss not having a lot of good stories lately, Myron, and, I guess, I would say to you that you recall the times that we would each tell each other a story and then have each one of us try to tell it again to someone else in the same kind of fashion and the same kind of desire and then kind of correct each other to make sure that the punch line always came out right. The humor that you brought to this chamber and to your life was something that really we all need more of, the laughter, the joy and the compassion that you provided all of us. I guess one of heights of pleasure, the height of being told during your funeral in relating you (sic-your) to being the salt of the earth was one of the highest honors that could be told to anyone and, especially, to a politician. A person who was willing to serve without reward, a person who was willing to share and to express his feelings in helping others. Yes, we will not only miss you Myron, but, most of all, we will remember the good things that you brought to this chamber. And when I mentioned when Dick Mautino passed away that you truly have brought into this chamber a great, great tribute. We express our gratitude to our family and give your condolences to Rosemary for we will always, always remember what Myron brought to this legislative Body. God Bless You." "Myron Olson as it's been said, was a public servant in truest sense of the word. He was certainly one of my best friends here in the General Assembly, and on several 23 121st Legislative Day STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE March 31, 1992 occasions, I had an opportunity to share a lot of experiences with Myron. Like myself, Myron was an early riser, and he prided himself in getting up early and having his desk clean, calling his wife, Rosemary, and then getting on the phone to constituents and the media in his district. He stayed in touch very closely with his district. But he also had a favorite restaurant in Springfield, a little place called McShanes, and he delighted in taking people to McShanes in the evening when there wasn't a reception or something and watching people burn their mouth on the hot sour soup and the hot saki that they serve at McShanes, and I know that John Countryman and Myron and I shared many delightful evenings at McShanes and I see some people smiling that have had the pleasure of tasting the hot sour soup with Myron at McShanes. Kay and I also had the privilege of hosting a reception in our suite prior to the House Republican campaign dinners each year in Chicago. Since my district was next to Myron's, people from our area that (sic-who) bought tickets to that event, you know, had to travel quite a distance and they liked to get into the city before the traffic got heavy, so we would host a reception for people, and I got to know a lot of the people from Myron's district at that time, and I think it's fitting today, as part of that tribute to Myron, that there are three gentlemen here that got up at 6:00 this morning, knew that there was going to be something done here today for Myron, and they just wanted to come down and be part of the tribute to Myron, and these...gentlemen are friends of Myron's, constituents of his from Lee County and they just wanted to be here part of paying tribute to Myron Olson on this...on this special day. And I think we know Myron down here as a...as a 24 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 representative like we are and what he did for the process here and how he participated, but, I think, in my mind, what distinguishes Myron Olson is what he did back in the district, the days that he spent in each community and village in his district, in the large district that he had, that he took it upon himself to be in touch with the people in his district, to serve his constituents and to know their needs and, has been said, he didn't ask you what your party was, he asked what he could do to help you. And if there was something that he could do, he would do that. He was a source of great in...information and inspiration to an awful lot of people. Also coming down today is the editor, the political editor, of the Dixon Telegraph, and Clark Kelly's sitting over there in the box. If Clark just raise his hand...He knew Myron quite well, and Clark covered all of the political activities of Myron for many, many years, and I'd just would like to quote the words that Clark used as he wrote the tribute to Myron following his death, and Clark said, 'I have lost a friend, and God has gained a public servant. I have no doubt that God welcomed Myron on Saturday with open arms saying, "Well done, thy (sic-my) good and faithful servant.""" Speaker Jones, L.: "Representative Woolard."
"You know, I think, everyone has stated so eloquently exactly what we believe and what our thoughts will always be for Myron Olson. I know, as a freshman Legislator, we all come in with fears and probably even look to the other side of the aisle, no matter which side we sit on, with a little bit of concern because we believe that that, in some way, is the enemy. But I think Myron Olson was the person who showed me, and very effectively showed me, that that wasn't the enemy at all, that he was here with a 25 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 single-purpose the same purpose that I had hoped to be here for myself-and that was to serve the people of the this great state. You know, I think we all expect and hope that someday we can be something more than just a politician, but that's something that we have to earn. It's not something that comes because we choose for it to be, and I think truly, without a doubt, the man that rose early and ate breakfast with many of us, the man who was always telling us something that was enjoyable to hear proved, without a doubt, that he was a statesman in the truest sense of the word. I remember the last conversation that I had with him. It was at breakfast as many of our conversations were: There's were eight or ten of us that have breakfast together a lot, and he was talking about his future plans and what he was going to do, and I said, 'Myron, how can you possibly see your future without being a part of this Body?' and he said, 'I'm looking forward to being Grandpa,' and I'm sure those grandkids are going to miss that grandpa, but he is going to share that with a lot of people. You know, I remember the man who came to work one day in this great assembly without any shoes, and we could say, 'Well, there probably have been these preceding him who came to work without shoes as well, but we had a contest, a fat man's contest, and we were all trying to lose weight and we had to weigh in just exactly as we came to work that day, and he was intent on winning, and without those shoes, it did make a difference because they beat us on this side of the aisle with Myron's help and others. You know, Lee, you mentioned a while ago that he was a stratgist and lots of times he was trying to figure out and point out ways that he could stick it to us. You know, I really believe what he was showing you, Lee, was ways that 26 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 he could stick us together and maybe those weren't really pins or needles or sticks that he was sticking our direction, but maybe it was props (sic-prompts) that we needed, and I believe that if we'd all take the lead that Myron has provided for us that we could all stick together and make things happen in this great state, as Myron Olson is praying happens today. And I hope that we can do that, and I believe that with his leadership and people like him that we can make positive things happen again in the State of Illinois, I thank the Lord for having (sic-has) the privilege of knowing Myron Olson." "Thank you, Madam Speaker, Ladies and Gentlemen of the House. I'll miss Myron Olson. I was his seat mate for the last couple of years. I've had the opportunity to visit with Myron on a lot...on a lot of the slow times we've had in this House. You meet a lot of people in this business, but there are few people that (sic-whom) you meet who teach you something, and Myron Olson always was able to teach us something, and I think three things I learned, that I think of right now: One is that Myron Olson really typ...was typical of what is important about this assembly and that is that we can have a debate, a very, very tough and vigorous debate, and when it's all over you can walk to the other side of the aisle and shake somebody's hand and laugh with them. Myron Olson could always do that. He could be as partisan as he wanted to be, but he could always take the time to walk to the other side of the aisle and make people realize that we're all trying to do what's best, what we believe is best. I think the other thing that Myron Olson taught me, because he spent an awful lot of time on the telephone, is that, no matter what we do down 27 121st Legislative Day STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE March 31, 1992 here, what's important are the people back home and you have to take care of those people, you have to communicate with them. There was nothing that Myron Olson enjoyed more than bringing back a newspaper from Dixon showing that he was in the headlines in Dixon, Illinois. He'd rather be in the headline in Dixon, Illinois, than in the Chicago Tribune because he knew that that was important for his area and that was what he was sent here to do. I think the last thing that Myron Olson taught me was there's a time for everything, and his time was now. He was one of those people that decided to leave this assembly, not by the voters, but by his own decision. He realized that it was time for him to leave and that there was somebody else, that he wasn't indispensable, he wasn't irreplaceable, he was somebody who...who was going to make his contribution and move on. The thing that I regret most was that when we had a chance to talk, Myron had some great trips planned in the future, and I know he was looking forward to taking those trips with his wife. I only wish that Myron would have had a little more time to smell the flowers because he sure worked hard for the people of Illinois. I'll miss him, I extend my condolences to Rosemary and his family and I know that all of us have lost a very, very good friend and a good teacher...a teacher of men." "Madam Speaker and Members of the House, from the first moment that Myron waggled his tie at me, you remember that gesture of his, that no one else had, I knew we were going to be friends, and he went on to point out that since both of us were former clerks it was clear that no one in the Chamber knew as much as we did about government. He was right, I might add. We went on to serve together on the 28 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 Election Law Task Force which was bipartisan as either of us could make it, and we were planning this spring to put together a redistricting commission plan that would make obsolete what we have all gone through, both ten years ago and this last year, and we will miss, I will miss personally, and I think you will all miss his being here to do that. Waggle your tails, your ties, wave to Myron, a perfectly wonderful human being has passed this way." Speaker Jones, L.: "Representative Wennlund."
"Thank you, Madam Speaker, Ladies and Gentlemen of the House. Many of the Members of this House knew that Myron Olson had a very special thing with respect to me. Each day he would ask me, 'Wennlund, what is the date today? Is it an odd day or an even day?' On the even days, Myron paid me a compliment-said; 'That's a wonderful tie you have, Wennlund,' or 'you're looking well today, but then again I'd lie about anything, but then on the odd days he would say something the most uncomplimentary comment he could possibly find either that my tie was something from a...outhouse wall or some other uncomplimentary remark, but he would start each day, 'Is it an even day or an odd day?' Today is March 31st, an odd day, indeed. I miss both the even days and the odd days, and I'll never forget Myron Olson." Speaker Jones, L.: "Representative Bob Olson."
"In the past six years, that I'vebeen in this Body, I have sat here and listened to comments by my fellow Representatives about departed Members of this Body, and I've have see the sadness in the eyes and heard the sadness that came from the hearts, but they were people that (sic-whom) I didn't know until Dick Mautino last fall. I can't recall a one of these Sessions of eulogies where I 29 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 knew the individual, but Myron Olson I did know. When I was appointed my first time in this room was during a Veto Session, and at that time I would get Myron's calls at my office down here and Myron would get my calls and so we got our heads together and we asked Lee if we could have adjoining offices and the same secretary, so the calls would at least get to the right secretary and she could sort things out. And that worked, but I'll tell you something else that really worked: being in an office next to Myron, I often asked his advice, would go sit and talk to him, and he would very often come and advise me. There's been a lot of serious comment about Myron here today, and we...they all acknowledged his humor. Myron had a special humor and I'm going to give a couple instances: It was about three years ago when we voted on the many tax bills at one...almost in one day's time, and I come from a conservative area, and it was my idea that I should be a 'no' vote on all those taxes, and we voted on a couple, and Myron walked over to me and he said, 'Olson, it's all right to be a conservative, but don't be a conservative horse's "patooty" (and that's a cleaned-up word).' He was serious, but yet it was humor. I remember when Myron sat across the aisle from Representative Young, and you could be walking up the aisle, and Myron would walk out and grab you around the shoulders and say, 'Come into my office.' Representative Balanoff grinning; it's happened), 'Come into my office.' (I see He would have the latest joke, and he would draw a crowd into his little office. I remember one day when, I believe Representative McPike was in the Chair, and we had some serious business come up rather unexpectedly and Representative McPike asked everyone who didn't belong in this room to please remove themselves and 30 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 121st Legislative Day March 31, 1992 he tried to transact that serious matter, but Myron had a little group in his office down there, and Myron didn't laugh, Myron kind of cackled and Myron's cackle-laugh more or less drowned out the Speaker that day, and he asked Myron if he could postpone his meeting to a later time. When you walked away from Myron, he often said 'Write, if you get steady work.' He had the right word for every occasion. Previous speakers here today have said, I believe Representative Levin said, he was a best friend and Representative Ropp said he was a good, good friend and someone else said he was a special friend. All I can say for Bob Olson is, 'Myron I'm going to miss you. You were my friend. Thank you." Speaker Jones, L.: "Representative Daniels moves that all Members be added as Sponsors.
