"Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Mr. Speaker, during this particular month of Black History Month I wanted to share something with our colleagues. Some of the things I'm gonna talk about I'm sure you already know. This is probably one of the most important citizens of our time that we have in our midst in Illinois. And I'm talkin' about none other than Miss Oprah Winfrey. As you remember last year, I guess I'm havin' a bad time with timing, I try to designate a week for this month in honor of her. And there's not a whole lot that I can do to equal what she does for the world. But I wanted to share some things. Oprah Winfrey, her career started at WVOL radio in Nashville while she was still in high school. So, I wanna encourage the young singers that there's a future if they pursue it. She was 19 at that time and she became the youngest African-American woman to anchor the news at the Nashville WTVF-TV. In 1984, she moved to Chicago to host the WLS-TV morning show in AM Chicago which became the number one local talk show which was renamed the Oprah Winfrey Show. She is not only a philanthropist and a humanitarian she's a magazine founder and editorial director of the O, The Oprah Magazine. She's not only that but she's a producer and an actress for the famous popular Broadway production of The Color Purple which delve into the lives of women and how they can be misused and mistreated but there's some light at the end of the tunnel. The things she done in South Africa recently with the forty million dollars ($40,000,000) to institute and build a school to educate the young people there who didn't have any promise of hope beyond her doing what she did. This is really an initiative from the United States Department of Justice. It provides that the listed exemption for private sales of single family homes and for apartments do not apply to the publication of intent to engage in unlawful discrimination. The Illinois Department of Human Rights has a contract with HUD for investigation of housing charges of discrimination. To maintain this contract the Illinois Human Rights Act must substantially be equivalent to the federal Fair Housing Act.
