But it hit so much closer to home when we see it here in one of our own state universities, for which we are so proud. I've walked many, many times past Cole Hall, though I've not actually taught in that particular classroom, I'm very familiar with the arrangement there. So at this time, I think we need to do all we can to make sure that the victims' families, the students, the faculty and staff, the whole NIU community is in our thoughts and prayers. And that we do what we can to bring that fine state institution back on its feet, get classes moving in a way, get students able to learn again, which is the mission of our university there. "I was sort of taken aback earlier when you wanted me to give the prayer, but I could have done that. But I am going to talk about someone who is in …who regularly did that. The first thing I want to mention, I want to recognize the… the Park Forest Public Library that bestowed upon me a… an award called the Neighborhood Hero award. I'm not a hero. I just did the things that come naturally for me to do in serving my constituents. But the Kente cloth stole that I'm wearing today is emblematic of that award, so I want to be that everyone knows that the Park Forest Library did present this to me and they're a great institution. A point about the Black History today. I want to talk about the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. Now, there's a train of political thought about not being 09500224.doc 7 STATE OF ILLINOIS 95th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 224th Legislative Day 2/15/2008 able to run away from one's destiny and I think that courage, sacrifice, and commitment really becomes a person's guiding light as that destiny became manifest and all of us know a lot about Dr. King, one of America's greatest citizens, world class theologian, and one of world history's most influential figures, influencing people in social action of movements worldwide. Now, everybody in this chamber knows that Dr. King led the Montgomery Bus Boycott, he was the head of SCLC, he had the famous March on Washington with the 'I Have a Dream' speech. He had the great 'Letter from Birmingham Jail'. Of course, it was Bloody Sunday and the Edmund Pettus Bridge incident, his moral opposition to the Vietnam War, the Poor Peoples' Campaign. He was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Prize. He led the Memphis Sanitation Worker Strike, and of course, he was assassinated in 1968. But what some are apt to forget is Dr. King's Illinois's connection. In spring of 1966, Dr. King came to Chicago to enact his northern strategy where he focused on fair housing and the SC… SCLC (sic- Southern Christian Leadership Conference) wanted him to meet with a coalition of Chicago civil rights groups which was called the CCCO (sic- Council of Community Organizations), which was headed by Al Raby and I met Dr. King that year. He had an apartment on 16th and Drake, and what a lot of people don't know is, there was an occasion it was called Freedom Sunday, in June of 1966, where he spoke at Soldier Field in front of about fifty thousand (50,000) people. Now the 'I Have a Dream' speech was only about 7 minutes. Okay. But Freedom Sunday was his event 09500224.doc 8 STATE OF ILLINOIS 95th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 224th Legislative Day 2/15/2008 and it lasted for about two and a half hours, and there he talked about the scourge of discrimination in this country and the redeeming nature of reaching common ground or rapprochement between opposing groups. He also had a statement that he made frequently which was, 'we should find a way to live together as bothers and sisters, or die apart as fools.' Now, when he talked about dying, he talked about dying symbolically. But you know, I wonder if all of us here in this Body and all of us over the state say to ourselves what are we willing to symbolically die for, what are we willing to sacrifice, to give up, maybe take a particular point of view that… you know, might be the path less traveled and I think that that's really what he was talking about. What on a daily basis are we willing to do to advance the cause of togetherness in this world that may not necessarily be popular? So, let's ask ourselves that question on a daily basis. I think that that adage about living together as bothers and sisters or dying apart as fools, we may take a page from Dr. King's notebook in how we deal with our business down here in the state, in the General Assembly and amongst all the levels of government.
