"Mr. Speaker and Members of the chamber, I hope all of you will take time to make note of the number of people going around with sneakers today, those that got the memo. And it's an important event. I don't think anybody's mentioned yet it in here today. And it's the American Cancer Society's coaches versus cancer and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network are teaming up to help put an end to cancer. And they are organizing today what's called suits and sneakers and it's for a cancer prevention study. And I hope all of you have read about it. Look that up. It's to raise awareness about the importance of cancer research and there'd be nothing greater than we get to the point that we've solved that and if we get there through research. So if you see people around here with sneakers, I tell you, I've never worn sneakers on a Session day before to the floor, but it feels real good and maybe it's something we should do more of, but it's in support of cancer research. And I think the Cancer Society and this project deserve our thanks and appreciation. Let's show it to them."

Of the 50 largest companies in Chicago, 567 individual members of their boards of which only 12 percent are racial minorities. What this Resolution is saying is that we, as a state, have tremendous purchasing power not only through what we do in terms of contracting and vendors, but also in terms of bond deals, professional services, underwriters, engineers, other service firm opportunities and that we should be working to promote those companies which understand the competitive advantage of diversity, understand how it opens new markets, understand how it creates a new and more competitive workforce and that that's a benefit to the private sector as well as to us. This Bill does not have opposition which I think is a recognition of the business community, how important diversity is. This is an opportunity to make sure that we begin to promote those companies that reflect those values that I know we all share. I urge the adoption of this Resolution."
