She was a 39-year-old mother of five children from Michigan, and she decided at the call of Dr. King, to travel to Alabama, to join in the voting rights struggle. And at the conclusion of Dr. King's monumental speech in Montgomery, Alabama, she began to transport people, the marchers, back to Selma and along that route between Selma and Montgomery, a member of the Ku Klux Klan shot and killed Viola Liuzzo. And Viola, I… may peace and blessings be upon her. Viola and her children, of course, gave us great sacrifice for this country and her memorial stands as a sign for all of us to remember the sacrifices that were given and the lives that were lost, so that people could participate in this country's most fundamental right, and that is the right to vote. And it is my duty and the duty of every Member of this chamber to ensure that franchise for all members of this country. And I thank you, Mr. Speaker, for a few moments of the time of this Assembly."

"Thank you, Mr. Speaker. This Bill is very limited in scope. It's a initiative of the Cook County State's Attorney Office. It simply amends the Criminal Code by extending the time period within a prosecution may take place for some very serious crimes when they're committed along with a sexual assault. What we did years ago is extend the statute of limitations for a sexual assault crimes if DNA evidence were discovered lately… or later after the 3-year statute of limitations; it was extended to 10. This Bill simply allows prosecution for serious crimes that are committed after the statute of limitation expires that are committed in conjunction with a sexual assault. Those crimes include aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery, home invasion, or kidnapping. I'll be happy to answer any questions."

"My analysis indicates the Cook County Public Defender's opposed, but they have not spoken to me. It's my understanding, they oppose any increase in statutes of limitation."
