They weren’t rapists; they weren't thieves; they were not drug dealers. It took a lot to raise 10 kids and send us all to Catholic schools, but they did it. People from Mexico come here looking for a better opportunity to fulfill the American dream. They're not thieves; they're not drug dealers; and they're not rapists. My dad worked hard all his life. He fought for this country in Korea. My family fought in the Vietnam War. My family fought in the Iraqi War. Why? Because a symbol of what their flag stands for, equality. If you go on the east side of Chicago, there's a wall and it has the names of individuals who gave up their lives in Vietnam. And if you count the names, there's more Mexican names than any other nationality that gave their lives in Vietnam in the State of Illinois. You talk about equality but yet in this day and age you still can't get rid of that nasty word, that nasty word called racism. I know most of you and some of you have suffered that who are standing here today, so you know how it feels. But yet today we have, in this day and age, the audacity of a man who wants to be the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who said people who come from Mexico are rapists, drug dealers, and thieves. During the 2015 NBA finals… now this is a big deal here, folks… Andre Iguodala averaged 16.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. And in clenching the game, he collected 25.5 assists and 5 rebounds. Andre Iguodala was named the NBA finals Most Valuable Player, the first NBA champion and NBA finals MVP right here from Springfield, Illinois. Andre and his family started the Andre Iguodala Youth Foundation to promote athletics as a conduit to educational excellence. The organization sponsors numerous events each year that make a difference for Springfield youth and their families. Therefore, we congratulate Andre's family on winning the 2014-'15 NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors and thank him for his commitment to the Springfield community. This weekend not a single hotel room will be available in the City of Chicago. They're all booked. This weekend restaurants and entertainment venues throughout the City of Chicago will be at capacity. And on July 3, 4, and 5, 60 thousand people will enter Soldier Field each night with approximately 86 percent of them being from out of town spending money on our local economy. Why are they coming? They're coming to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the little band that could, the Grateful Dead, and see the band's final performances. I saw my first Grateful Dead concert back in 1987. In the band's words, the bus came by, I got on and that's when it all began. During my years as a student at Cal-Berkeley I saw many… many more Grateful Dead concerts. I was at their last show at Soldier Field in 1995 and I'll be at their final performances this weekend. Despite all the negative things repeatedly being said about our state, when this band had to choose where to play its final shows and bring its fans and money, it chose Chicago. It chose Illinois. And why did it do that? It chose Illinois because of all of Chicago and all of Illinois have to offer. While we get fixated on tax policy and how DCEO should be set up, they looked at our state's positives and decided this was where they wanted to end their career. This weekend's concerts are also missed opportunity for Illinois. Each day approximately 53 thousand people from outside our state will roam our streets, go to our restaurants, and read our newspapers, and watch our news. And what are they going to hear? They're going to hear that Governor Rauner has proposed an unbalanced budget. They're going to hear that the General Assembly has passed an unbalanced budget. And they will see that our solution to two unbalanced budgets is to shut government down this weekend. And what will they conclude? Their conclusion will be that Illinois is run by a ship of fools. And the question is, are they wrong? But the Grateful Dead are about happiness and hope. The community of the Grateful Dead fans realized long ago that when they come together they can survive.
