"…police officers who are mourning the… the death of their colleagues. It takes a special person to be a police officer. You have to have patience, courage, and dedication. The danger you put yourself in every day you're on the job is so hard on our families. When you start your watch, you give your family a kiss goodbye. It could be the last time you tell them 'I love you'. When you hear on the radio 'Shots fired', and that other people are running away, you are running toward the shots. Sometimes it could be a thankless job, but rest assure, there are people who are grateful for the job you do. So when people swear at you, and spit at you, and criticize you, hold your head up high, because we are proud of the job you do to protect the public. So many never came home. Just know we are forever grateful for your service, your courage, and your ultimate sacrifice. Sometimes, it really hits home, because there's three individuals that I'd like to mention, and they will never be forgotten. One is Officer Donny Marquez. He worked in the same unit as myself and Senator Muñoz. He was killed in the line of duty serving a warrant. His end of watch was March 18, 2002. Officer Ben Perez worked with my brother on the same shift. As someone who wore the uniform before joining the General Assembly, I understand the challenges faced by our police officers on a daily basis. Police officers today are under greater scrutiny and pressure than at perhaps any other time in our nation's history. It takes a very brave man and woman to walk out that door, to go to work, and knowing they may never see their families again. Tragically, for too many, that fear becomes a reality. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 123 police officers lost their lives in 2015 in the United States. Here in Illinois to… today 33, according to the… this same institution, have lost their lives in the line of duty: 1 by air, 6 by auto accident, 16 by gunfire, 2 by heart attack, 1 by motorcycle, 2 struck by a vehicle, 4 vehicular assault. We've lost two here in Illinois. After checking some of the station, the dispatcher asked if I could leave for a possible shooting. Dispatcher said that a lady came running up to the hotel clerk, saying that someone had shot her daughter. I get to the scene. I look, the clerk said she didn't know where the lady had gone. I look around, there's… I don't see any signs of any evidence of… of anything going on. The hotel is a motel, and all of the doors you had to get to from the outside. I start walking through, looking, hearing. I see nothing. I get to the back of the hotel. I can't see anything. I grab my radio, getting ready to say that I can't find anything, when I hear a blood-curdling scream. I look up. On the second floor, door is open. I run up the stairs, look in the door, and I see this lady hovering over a dowel covered in ketchup. I look over to my right. I see an adult male, with a gunshot wound to his head, and a gun in his right hand. I look back, and I realize it wasn't a dowel. It was a 2-year-old girl, who had been shot and killed by her father. Usher the mother outside, and try to get aid. Unfortunately, there was no hope. The men and women of the law enforcement and our first responders, have a, very difficult job. They do wish to protect us, at every point over their career. Do we have good officers every single place? No. There's always good and bad people in every profession. We should strive to get the bad ones out. We are hopefully going to go down and pay our respects. And we've been talking a lot about how this budget impasse, is hurting people. But last year, nearly 67 thousand Illinois residents heard the words, you have cancer, and over 25 thousand of those lost their lives to this horrible disease. Cancer is a disease that touches the families across the State of Illinois, and it's our responsibility, I believe, as public officials, to show them that they're not alone in the fight, that we're with them, and this event is a small token to do that.
