If I could have your attention, I'd like to introduce some guests I have to my upper left. They are constituents of mine and of Senator Weaver's and they are here to draw attention to a birth defect condition called -- Omphalocele. And January is Birth Defects Prevention Month and one week from today, January 31st, is Omphalocele Awareness Day. And if I may, I'd like to tell you about these two families. So each of them are here with a -- a child. One is Hope Carlson, who's ten months old. Another is Michael Jaggard, who's fourteen years old. Both of 'em were born with this condition, which is an abnormality of the abdominal organs and the -- abdominal wall. Both Hope Carlson and her family and Michael Jaggard and his family have surmounted this birth defect and are now living healthy lives. And their families are displaying most admirable compassion, in that they're reaching out to other families across the country who have children with this condition and lending them support and information and love. So I would like to introduce the grandparents of Hope Carlson, my 41 STATE OF ILLINOIS 100th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 4th Legislative Day 1/24/2017 longtime friends, Reverend Paul and Dr. Sandy Carlson.
