Mr. President, in the gallery behind me is a good friend of mine, Stephanie Brown, the spouse of former State Representative 5 STATE OF ILLINOIS 100th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 106th Legislative Day 4/10/2018 Adam Brown. I just noticed she was in the gallery, so let's say hi to Stephanie and welcome her to Springfield. And then, Ladies and Gentlemen, in the President's Gallery -- and -- and this is sort of a sad point of personal privilege, but if I may. Many that have been around here for a while may have remembered Allen Bennett. Allen Bennett had been a lobbyist for the Illinois Federation -- Illinois Federation {sic} (Fraternal Order) of Police, but before that he was a State Representative, before that he was the Moultrie County State's Attorney, and before that he was a Macon County Public Defender, and most recently served us as a Circuit Judge in Shelby County for the 4th Judicial Circuit. Having also been a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Illinois, Allen Bennett is one of the rare people that served in all three branches of government in the State of Illinois. He was an incredible public servant. He gave of his life to his constituents and our great State. His family is here, Ladies and Gentlemen. In the gallery, we have his wife, Tina Bennett. And, Tina, if you'd stand. We have A.B. Bennett, Christi Bennett, Tammera Bennett; good friends, Gina and Lori; and I'm not sure, I think that's -- that -- yeah, and so, myself and -- and Representative Halbrook had the good fortune of -- of campaigning with him, serving next to him. He was a good friend and a great public servant. We truly appreciate what -- what he gave, but more importantly, we appreciate you all sharing him with us over a career over a lifetime. And we're just truly sorry that he's passed on to better places to be sure, but we will miss him. So, thank you.

Thank you, Mr. President and Members of the Body. Today is April 10th, which is the day we do our annual equal pay resolution. This is the day that a woman must work till in the -- across the year to earn the same amount of money that our male counterparts earn for the same work. I've done this resolution for many, many years and I'm hoping that there's going to come a time when I don't ever have to do it again. But the gap is much more significant for women of color. Overall, it's eighty cents for every dollar a man makes. For African American women, it's sixty-three cents. For Latino women, it is fifty-four cents. What that means is that over a forty-year career, African American women lose over four hundred thousand dollars of potential income. For Latino women, that is nearly a million dollars that they lose over the course of their working lives. There are a lot of different things that move into this, including gender discrimination and outright sexism and moving in and out of the workplace to take care of family and children and all the things that are unique to happen -- women across certain sectors. But today is April 10th, our 29 STATE OF ILLINOIS 100th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 106th Legislative Day 4/10/2018 annual equal pay resolution. So we're going to highlight this to continually ask the question: What kind of state do we want to be? What kind of country do we want to be? And this is just as an important question for our sons, as well as our daughters. Thank you.
