Mr. President, I have two guests with me today and I hope the Chamber would -- would quiet down just so I get a -- a great chance to -- introduce these two ladies. First, it is Patricia Joan Murphy. She's our Worth Township Committeeman and she's also the 4 STATE OF ILLINOIS 101st GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 72nd Legislative Day 1/29/2020 Trustee of one of the best community colleges in the State of Illinois, that being Moraine Valley Community College. Her family has a long lineage of public service to the State. We're just so honored to have her here today. In addition to Mrs. Murphy, we have Cyndi Berg, who is the Trustee of the Village of Tinley Park. Cyndi is a registered nurse, who's worked in the operating room. She currently also serves as the Chair of the Illinois Liquor (Control) Commission. A dedicated public servant to the State of Illinois and a proud representative of the south suburbs. I'd like to give them a warm Springfield welcome. Thank you, Mr. President.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, if I could just have your attention for a moment. I know that over the last few days in the press we all learned of the shooting of a trooper - former trooper, just retired last year after twenty-five years of service - two other troopers were shot and they remain hospitalized. I just wanted to speak a minute about Trooper Greg Rieves, the gentleman that was murdered. We've been friends since we were five years old. And Greg was always the nicest person, really warm, a good guy, a mentor. He came home all the time to make a difference in 5 STATE OF ILLINOIS 101st GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 72nd Legislative Day 1/29/2020 our community. And we lost a hero for -- for the Village of Maywood and we're really heartbroken and saddened by losing Greg, so I just wanted to read something here because it's been an emotional weekend. So Greg was the kind of person you never saw angry. He was a peacemaker, who was always smiling. We have been friends since we were in kindergarten and it feels like losing a brother. When he was in the Illinois State Police Academy, I was working on my master's here at the University of Illinois at Springfield and I was so honored to have the opportunity to attend his graduation twenty-five years ago. Our community and the Proviso East Class of '86 is hurting in the loss of a local hero and -- and inspiration. This tragedy has left us heartbroken. And we will honor our brother, Trooper Greg Rieves' legacy by coming together with love and support for one another. The entire Proviso East community bleeds blue for our fellow Pirate. I wish the two injured troopers a safe and speedy recovery and extend my deepest condolences to Mr. and Mrs. Rieves, his parents; his siblings; his family; and his friends. I would just ask for a moment of silence, please.

Today I rise in remembrance of twenty-one-year-old Miguel A. Villalon. He was killed when a vehicle he was riding in was struck by a roadside bomb in Kandahar, Afghanistan. A second soldier from Virginia was also killed. Their deaths were the first U.S. casualties of 2020 in Afghanistan. Miguel was raised in Texas, but moved to Illinois and attended East Aurora High School. He became captain of the school's Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps -- their drill team. East High's award-winning NJROTC program is the largest in the nation, currently with six hundred kids. On January 11th, he became the fifth fatality from East Aurora High School in this war. The City of Aurora and East Aurora High School District are holding a memorial later today. My heart is with Specialist Villalon -- Villalon's family, friends, East High classmates, and his brothers and sisters in arms. Please join me for a moment of silence in his memory.
