Mr. President, Members of the Illinois Senate, I have an awesome opportunity to introduce two young, special people. Marvin interned for my office for three years. Unbelievably bright - that's the only thing I can tell you, that he's -- he's not only unbelievably bright, but he's just a -- a good kindhearted young man that truly wants to make a difference. And quite honestly, throughout the summer, I could have left the office and Marvin could have done a better job. I'm just going to be the first one to admit it, and I'm sure some of you would too. But I'll just say we're very lucky in the State of Illinois to have him. He's getting his Master's Degree in Public Policy from the University of Chicago. He's a product of the University of Illinois system. And I'm also proud to introduce his sister, Melanie, who's here as well. I'm assuming she'll be working for our office here pretty soon, I hope. But Melanie is studying public policy at the University of Illinois, here today. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, as we celebrate Black History Month, I stand in remembrance of Katherine G. Johnson, who died this week at the age of one hundred and one. Like so many brilliant women of color, her contributions have only recently been recognized with the reverence and respect that they deserve. She and her fellow human computers were honored in the film Hidden Figures, which documented how she and other women of NASA performed the complex calculations necessary to send human beings out beyond the boundaries of our planet. With little more than a pencil and a slide rule and one of the finest mathematical minds in the country, she helped plot the successful flight of Alan Shepard, the first American in space; she made it possible for John Glenn to become the first American to orbit the Earth; she calculated the precise trajectories that led to Apollo II's successful landing on the moon in 1969 and helped Neil Armstrong make a safe return 12 STATE OF ILLINOIS 101st GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 83rd Legislative Day 2/26/2020 to Earth after his history-making moonwalk. Katherine Johnson was born in a segregated country and lived to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by our first African American President, President Obama. She was born when humanity was earthbound and helped humanity reach the moon. Her life and her works are an example of what can happen when we give people from all backgrounds the opportunity to participate in our grandest endeavors. I invite you all to join me in a moment of silence to honor her works and the works of all women, especially women of color, yet to be recognized for their excellence. Thank you.
