PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR HUNTER) 3 STATE OF ILLINOIS 103rd GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 42nd Legislative Day 5/2/2023 Ladies and Gentlemen, Senator McClure is seeking recognition. What purpose do you rise, sir?
For -- for an announcement.
PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR HUNTER) State your announcement, Senator McClure.
Thank you, Madam President. Yesterday, due to what the Illinois State Police have called a terrible series of convergent circumstances, including a combination of dry conditions and extreme winds, they were black out conditions on Interstate 55 south of Springfield, leading to numerous crashes, injuries and tragically, ten (seven) fatalities, so far. According to the latest information available to us, more than seventy cars and trucks were involved in the crashes, including several that caught fire, and at least thirty-seven people were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to life threatening. Having visited the scene yesterday, I can tell you that the circumstances at which the first responders, and all those who came to the scene were operating, were extremely difficult, and I suspect, emotionally, it's going to be difficult for everyone at that scene for quite some time. I would hope that we can all continue to keep those that are still receiving treatment, and those first responders that responded to the scene, in our thoughts and prayers. And I would ask for a moment of silence for all of those that were lost in this tragic -- tragic event.
PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR HUNTER) Please -- please rise for a moment of silence. Thank you.
