By centering parent leadership and public policy Mom on a Mission Day lifts up parent led efforts to communities across Chicago and Illinois, including Belmont Cragin, Hermosa, and Humboldt Park in my district, as well as throughout the State. With us today in the Hall of Flags, our parent and family leaders here for Moms on a Mission Day. And yes, dads too. I'm told many of them are here for the first time. Thank you, Mr. President. Yesterday was World Asthma Day, an initiative organized by the Global Initiative for asthma in collaboration with the World Health Organization. Asthma affects 26.8 million people in the United States, including 380,000 adults and 160,000 children in Illinois. Asthma is a leading cause of missed work and school days, and disparities persist in our State, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health the rates of asthma, emergency room visits among black people and Latinos are eight times and nearly two times the rate of whites, respectively. Sadly, 137 people died of asthma in 2018. These deaths are largely preventable. That's why I am proud to champion Senate Bill 3203, which passed this Chamber with overwhelming bipartisan support and recently passed the House Insurance Committee. Senate Bill 3208 {sic} (3203) will help make prescription inhalers more affordable for many patients, like those living with asthma, who require prescription inhalers to control their disease and live a healthier life. As a person with asthma, I know firsthand what it feels like to struggle to breathe. No one should be unable to access lifesaving drugs that help them breathe due to cost. The American Lung Association is championing this legislation with me, and you'll hear more about this support of this measure and additional policies, priorities to help protect lung health in Illinois during the Lung Association's Advocacy Day today. I look forward to our continued work together to pass this legislation to assure affordable and adequate health care access to all. To the resolution. Thank you, Mr. President. We would like to declare in the State of Illinois, May 8th, 2024, as the day of the rebozo. The rebozo is a traditional Mexican garment that is a hybrid of a scarf and a shawl. It's a respected site within the Latino community, and it's an icon of the indigenous culture in Mexico, while representing the strength, resilience and loving nature of Mexican women. And the rebozo is not only a symbol of national identity and religiosity, it represents Mexico on an international level as well. It's a symbol of love, transmitted from grandmother to mother to daughter as a physical embodiment of safety, courage and love for the family and the country.
