I have two important groups that are here visiting the Capitol today, and I wanted to take just a moment to introduce them to the Senate. Directly behind me here on the south gallery is a group of 18 students from my district. They are high school students, Juniors and Seniors, and they have been participating in a fellowship program in my office learning about the legislative process, they set up a system of democracy where they elected weekly speakers for their meetings. They have -- they have worked on legislation, and they're here to not only learn about the process, but to advocate and they will be visiting with several Members. They're all standing in the gallery behind me. If you guys would all please stand up and please give them a warm Springfield welcome and welcome to the Capitol.

And this is both of these introductions are a matter of personal pride for me. I love to interest young students to be engaged in the process, but this is a matter of accomplishment that I take pride in. Ladies and Gentlemen, in the north gallery, we have the newly elected and appointed members of the Chicago Public School -- School Board. With me here today are Anusha Thotakura, Frank Niles (Thomas), Debby Pope, Karen Zaccor, Jitu Brown, Norma Rios-Sierra, and from my own district, Ed Bannon, and they are here advocating for educational resources for the students of the Chicago Public Schools and the students of every school district in the State. They're here doing the work that is necessary as a part of our process. They are newly elected joining this process of democracy, and I'm so proud to have them down here. Thank you -- Madam President, I just want to introduce the Chamber to the friends and family of the late Jay Pearce, who are joining us in the gallery today. Jay was a -- a -- a past constituent of mine, but born in Michigan, raised in Winnetka here in Illinois, and received his bachelor's degree at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He was someone who had a -- a dedicated career in TV and radio for 40 years, spending half of that time working in public broadcasting, including work in Southern Illinois, WCIL in Carbondale, WDDD in Marion, and then of 13 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 25th Legislative Day 3/18/2025 course, WSIU on campus in Carbondale. He -- he was the news director for the Illinois Radio Network and was part of WEBX, which was an Urbana-Champaign FM station that was one of the first broadcasters to actually stream programing online. He served as a radio program director and station manager for WILL which was a nonprofit, not-for-profit public media service at University of Illinois, and that began in 1998 and then he moved to the district I represent up in the Quad Cities and in 2012, serving as the CEO and general manager of WVIK in the Quad Cities. He was also the local -- local morning edition host. So a voice familiar to so many in our listening area. He was most recently the director of the Illinois Public Broadcasting Council, who I believe is represented here today, as well. And also, was a co-host of the pancreatic cancer cast with his brother Gary. He served on several boards of directors NPR, Quad Cities Illinois Rotary Club, the Illinois News Broadcasters Association Foundation, the Associated Press Broadcasters Association and One Foundation, in Bettendorf. He had a long -- long career and was very much looking forward to his retirement. He retired in in 2022, but unfortunately not long after was diagnosed with cancer that he ultimately succumbed to in August of 2024. I absolutely regret not being able to have the long relationship with him, as some of the folks gathered here today have had, but I can tell you that the moments that I got to spend with him, whether it was working with WVIK or whether it was just knocking on his door during -- during my door knocking phases. He was someone that I think had a lot of knowledge, experience, and just an absolute love of life. and I do sincerely wish he was given more of it. But he made a difference during that time and rather than ask for a moment of silence knowing -- knowing him 14 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 25th Legislative Day 3/18/2025 even for as short a time as I did, I feel like he would appreciate more a celebration and a thank you to him wherever he's listening from now for a life well lived, and please welcome and -- and give thanks to his family and friends here to support him today.
