I am honored to come before the Body of the Senate this afternoon to express my complete joy and satisfaction of honoring Route 66 and having the year 2026 mark the 100th Anniversary of Route 66, a roadway that has become an enduring symbol of freedom, adventure and economic activity that's contributed to the culture and identity of Illinois. Whereas, Illinois holds a unique place in the history of Route 66, it was the first state to pave the highway in its entirety and serves as the starting point of this 26 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 27th Legislative Day 3/20/2025 legendary route in downtown Chicago, passing through numerous communities in Illinois. I -- Senator Martwick, I don't see Senator Martwick, but Senator Martwick has a very special tie to Route 66; he rode every square inch of that from Chicago to California. I believe in the year 1995. So, we -- we thank Senator Martwick for utilizing -- utilizing Route 66 the way he did. Route 66 has been embedded in the American culture through various works of art, including literature, film, and music such as John Steinbeck's novel of "The Grapes of Wrath", and I'll spare you all me singing, "Get Your -- Get Your kicks On Route 66". Despite -- despite the passage of the Equal Pay Act in 1963, women across the country still do not take-home wages equal to that of their male counterparts. Equal Pay Day marks the current state of gender pay gap for women. So, for example, March 25th is all Women's Equal Pay Day; Equal Pay Day for Asian American, Native American, or Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Women's -- Women is April 7th; for moms, Equal Pay Day is May 6th; for LGBTQIA+ 28 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 27th Legislative Day 3/20/2025 Equal Pay Awareness Day that's on June 17th; for Black Women's Equal Pay Day, it's July 10th; Native -- sorry, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Women's Equal Pay Day is August 28th; Latina Equal Pay Day is October 8th; Disabled Women's Equal Pay Day is October 23rd; and Native American Women's Equal Pay Day is November 18th. These are the days and the time that it takes, in order, for all of these different groups of women, in order, to actually earn the same amount or a dollar, as opposed to men. So, it's time that we continue to do the work to make sure that we are bridging that divide and doing everything we can, in order, to make sure that women are paid. Thank you.
