Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm honored today to introduce the Illinois (Extension) 4-H Legislative Connection and the Delegation of forty, 4-H members from across Illinois who are attending the University of Illinois Extension 4- H Legislation Connection event. Yesterday, they were out in all our offices, and they're back again today and tomorrow, at the Capitol. These youth represent twenty-seven different 4-H programs from counties reaching all across the State, some that touch the 5 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 43rd Legislative Day 5/7/2025 Wisconsin border to our southernmost border and across the entire State, representing nearly two hundred thousand 4-H participants in all one hundred and two counties. These teens represent the Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team, as well, 4-H members trained through the Speaking for Illinois 4-H Program. They have been active in their local 4-H clubs and communities, and community service projects and 4-H learning experiences that include STEM, Animal Sciences, Healthy Living, Civic Engagement, and Creative Arts. And of course, 4-H expands from rural to urban areas across the State. We know many of you in the room are 4-H alumni or have a connection to a 4-H. If you are a 4-H alumni or you are engaged with 4-H, please stand along with our visitors today. Illinois 4- H is an active 4-H Alumni Association and we invite everyone to be a part of 4-H. Reverend Eaddy has faithfully served as the pastor of People's Church of Harvest Church of God in Christ in Chicago, Illinois for over 45 years, demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to the well-being and upliftment of individuals and families, particularly on the West Side of Chicago. And under his leadership, his visionary leadership, the People's Church of Harvest has provided essential community services, including before and after school care. academic tutoring, computer and financial literacy programs, career counseling, and summer youth employment opportunities. Thank you. I rise to introduce and -- and welcome my constituents, Tanya Dong and her mom, Lin Dong, to Springfield. Tanya has been selected as one of the girls, of the girls Lead Program, the Illinois Council on Women and Girls, chaired by the Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, select girls between fifth grade and 12th grade to participate in the Girls Lead Program, which offers a unique shadowing and mentoring opportunity. Participants in the program, shadows legislators so that they learn more about government and public service. Tanya attended my Coffee and Connect on April 26th at Lamb's Farm in Libertyville, and she had the opportunity to participate in the open discussion with constituents. Let me provide some insight into this amazing young leader and share some of her just 2025 accomplishments. Tanya is 12 years old. She's a sixth grader at Daniel Wright Junior High School and Lincolnshire District School District 103, and she hopes to one day work to support children with mental and neurological disorders. Now, here are just a few of Tanya's academic achievements. She skipped level math placement among two girls in her grade. She advanced as one of the finalists in a spelling bee. She was selected as one of the State finalists in the Illinois Letters About Literature contest. She advanced to the regional finalists in the National Science Bee and National History Bee, heading to two national finals in May. Tanya was accepted into the 9 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 43rd Legislative Day 5/7/2025 talent program at Northwestern University for Biology and Chemistry studies in the summer of this year. She also spends considerable time volunteering in the community. She is a member of the Green Team. She volunteers weekly with the school's Special Olympics team, and she volunteers monthly with the Lake County Forest Preserve Restoration Project. Oh, if that's not enough, there's more. Her extracurricular activities include school finalist in long jump, heading for a distance conference this weekend. Bronze level figure skating and synchronized skating athlete. She qualified for the Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships. She's a level nine pianist, and she's an Origamist, a member of the Origami USA, the American National Origami Society, and she was selected again this year for the Girls Lead program. Beloved community restaurateur Ramon Reyes Venegas passed away peacefully on September 13th, 2024, at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, Herlinda Reyes, his children Teresa, Veronica, Ivoni, Andres and his grandchildren Roquer, Sylor and Roquelin. He was born in Ocotlan Jalisco, Mexico on January 8th, 1948. His childhood in Ocotlan was full of adventures and memories he often shared with family and friends. As a child, he learned the family business of making birria. He had a passion for sharing this generational dish with everyone. He learned this culinary skill from his grandfather, Don Tereso Reyes, his dad, Andres Reyes, taught him the family business. And his mom, Genoveva Venegas, taught him how to connect with people. He loved learning 12 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 43rd Legislative Day 5/7/2025 and traveling, so much that he decided to take a chance and venture out to the United States. That decision forever changed his trajectory in life. At the age of 26, he decided he wanted to own his own business. Determined -- determined to succeed, he opened his first restaurant Birrieria Ocotlan in South Chicago, which was his passion. Ramon proved that not only was he a great businessman, but he was also a loving and devoted husband and father. Cherished and exuded love for his grandchildren. He never met a stranger. He was a firm believer in doing good for others without expecting anything in return. And he is dearly missed. I ask for a moment of silence.

As we've mentioned and we talked about, the Divine Nine holds a special place not only in the history of the State of Illinois, but in the history of this country. The work that Sigma Gamma Rho does, and I'm -- I'm proud to partner with them on their Rhosebuds program out of my office. They have a mentoring program that they work, they run out of my office. And so, their motto of scholarship, sisterhood and service, they live that every day. So it is my honor to -- to -- to stand here in support of the resolution and thank the women of Sigma Gamma Rho, particularly my sister, who is also a member of the sorority. And thank them for -- she is not here, but she is listening. I have some of my very good friends from college that are members of Sigma Gamma Rho, and I appreciate them for coming down on Advocacy Day. Now, I wanted to acknowledge our beautiful young lady here that's on our Senate staff, that's also a member of Sigma Gamma Rho. So, when we talk about D9 and we talk about the advocacy and the work that we do, we also want to make sure we put into a context that we have beautiful women here in our legislature as well. Senators and Members of the Chamber today we welcome to the Senate Chamber the Benet Academy Boys' Basketball Class 4A State Champions. On Saturday, March 16th{sic} (15th) the Redwings defeated Warren Township 55 to 54 to capture their first boys State Championship. Hitting a -- got to put on my glasses. A fitting climax to the amazing season for the Redwings. Here are just some of the highlights from the regular season, 33 wins and 5 losses; A fourth consecutive East Suburban Catholic Conference Championship defeated 5 teams who had 30 or more wins; Defeated 11 teams with 25 or more wins; Defeated 18 teams with 20 or more wins. Defeated the Class A State Champion Chicago Hope Academy and defeated the Class 3A State Champion DePaul College Prep. Benet is led by head coach Gene Heidkamp. In his 17 years as head coach at Benet Coach Heidkamp's Redwings have won more than 421 games. Only Simeon High School in Chicago has a comparable record. Just this past Saturday, Coach Heidkamp was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. This remarkable record of achievement during Coach Heidkamp's tenure includes State tournament success. In the past 10 contested State tournaments, Benet Academy has played in the State Championship game 4 times. Few Illinois high schools can match that. There are persistent shortages, constant changes in health care delivery and workplace violence is also another issue that needs to be addressed.
