Thank you, President Rock, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate. It's my pleasure this afternoon to introduce to this Body the Gentleman wbo is serving as the Consul General of Poland to -- to - - in Chicago, Mr. Hubert Romanowski. In July of 1990, Mr. Hubert Romanowski was asked, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Krszysztof Szkrublewski, to be in charge of the Chicagoland office, to be the General Consul in Chicago. His tenure began -- began last month -- of November or 1990. Mr. Romanowskk is the first known communist to hold such a position in fifty years. Would you please greet Mr. Romanowski and his lovely Wife, Beverly. Mr. Romanowski. Let me just give you a brief background of Mr. Romanowski, if I may. In 1985 he was granted political asylum in the United States on the basis of his former arrest and imprisonment in Poland for his involvement in Solidarity activities. While in Chicago, Mr. Romanowski continued to support the Democratic Opposition Movement in Poland. He was the foundin: member of the Brotherhood of Dispersed Solidarity 3 STATE OF ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 40th Le:islative Day June 11, 1991 Members: which raised money for the opposition movement in Poland durinq khe breakz and he was very actively involved in the underqround years from 1985 to 1989. Mr. Romanowski was also involved in several other organizations. He Was a founding member of the New Polish National Alliance Fraternalo..tinaudiblel... He also helped organize the Chieago chapter of the Chicago Polish based club of Catholic -- intellectuals which brought together members of the post-World War era. Mr. Romanowski's most ambitious involvement was the revival of the Chicago chapter of the Polish University abroad PUNO, an institution his grandfather belped establish in England after World War II. As director of PUNO since 1986, Mr. Romanowski instituted English language, computer and business instructions for new emigres. In the 4ummer of 1990, Mr. -- Mr. Romanowski secured funds to organlze a summer business school in Krakow, a medieval city in Poland where a team of business instructors taught free-market economics to Polish students and entrepreneurs. Mr. Romanowski holds a doctorate degree in physical chemistry from the University of Wroalaw. During his academic career .he recekved numerous awards for his research in the field of chemistry, and has published xextensively àn the American and European scientific journals. In 1982 Romanowski accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1985 he became a research associate of Northwestern University, and in 1987 he took a position at the University of Chicago. So you can see, he's been actively tnvolved in our Chicaqoland area and in the State of Illinois. And I'm very pleased to introduce him now as the Consul General. Let's give him a warm reception.

And I just want you to be aware of the fact that it was this Body rlght here - the Senate - that provided the money to open the office in Warsaw. And it was our our hope and really it's really come back eenfold already. Where the number of people between Illinois and Warsaw has exchanged not only the -- in the academic basis, but as far as the business community, in making sure that that office is a viable office, and there is an exchange of ideas and democracy. There's also a 1ot of hope. And that hope comes from a 1ot of people and organizations that believe that Working together We can make a difference, and thak it is -- thak's ik's possible to improve the quality of life for a11 of us if we can stand together. There are a 1ot of walls in the world today, but there are also persons who are attempting to build some bridges.
