Thank you: Mr. President. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, if I could have a moment of your attention. Today -- today at 11 o'clock at the Old State Capitol, we were privileged by the presence of Governor Edgar and members of the community to mark the remembrance of the Holocaust. We had a group of beautiful, young high school students, who recited a program of song and poetry to memorialize one of the leaders, a gentleman by the name Janusz Korczak, who was one of the leaders in the Warsaw ghetEo uprising. The Warsaw ghetto uprising was the reaction of a small group of Jewish men, women and children to the process of annihilation that the Nazis undertook, and that took place fifty years ago this year. We recited at the memorial celebration or commemoration, should say - prayers to God; the recognition of the differences between people; the fact that over six million Jews died in the Holocauste for the only reason was that they Were Jewish; and that in addition to these six million men, women and children of the Jewish faith that were killedy there Were millions of others who were killed, slaughtered, because the Nazis wanted to cleanse the countries that they were occupying . It caused many of us to stop for a moment and to think of what the debate is regarding Bosnia: an ethnic cleansing. I don 't suggest that we 3 STATE OF ILLINOIS 88TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 43rd Legislative Day April 29, 1993 have a solution, but I've said today in the Education Committee, and I'm very proud to report that there Was a unanimous endorsement of something that I and many of you have very proudly said to our colleagues throughout the country: Illinois requires the teaching of the Holocaust. I'n T roud to say we are the only State that requires I'm sorry to say that we are the only State that requires it. The best way for us to remember, the best way for us to prevent the reoccurrence of these -- outrageous is not even the word -- unbelievable actions, is to not forget the past. Senator DeAngelis was gracious enough to join me over at the commemoration, and may I just leave with these thoughts that were inscribed on the walls of a cellar in Cologne, Germany - a cellar where Jews were in hiding from the Nazis: ''I believe in the sun, even when it is not shinlng. belleve in love, When feeling it not. I believe in God, even when he is silent.'' Thank you, Mr. President.
