Thank you, Mr. President. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, today, at 11 o'clock, we held a memorial service, as we do each year, as a Holocaust commemoration. And tf I could just take a f ! ew moments of your time, there are some thoughts that I Would like ko share with you regarding the Holocaust. The ceremony this morning, as always. is a very moving event. Governor Jim Edgar was present, gave some very meaningful comments. And I thought it was very appropriate, and I have distributed on your desks, a column written by Steve Neal, the political editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, entitled llWe Must Never Forget,'' and I hope you'11 take a few minukes to read it at your leisure. Ik talks about some of khe comments that he has received from M erican soldiers who, fkfty-plus years ago, liberated some of the Nazi concentration camps. And he also talks about some of the historical revisionists who try to convince the world that the Holocauskg , e ich resulted in the deaths of six million Jews and millions of non-lews, never took place. And I thought that you might find Steve Neal's column today of -- of interest. Her name is Katherine Lipner. She told about h0W, in I I 1943: she received, from Jewish parents, five young Jewish I I children - the oldest one was ten years old - because their I j I parents were taken away to the death camps. And she had the love I I and desire to try to protect these children. So before the I I #ZCORts were taken away to the death canps, five children were I I given to Mrs. Llpner. And she raised these children. She told of I I the story of how on one Christmas Eve, she looks out the window I j and she sees gestapo trucks coming to the area where she was 1 I I living. And she took her five chtldren and she ran down the I I sereet, on Christnas Eve. And it was midniqht, and she ran into I I the ehurch with khe five Jewish children and they attended a 1 I I midnight service on christmas Eve. And it was because of that j I service that the gestapo that searehed khe buildings didnlk find I I these five children. And Eoday, fifey years lakere one of those 1 I children still, as a niee Jewish boy, every Christmas Eve attends I I amidnightserviceinmemoryofthe--ofhisbrothersandsisters whose -- who lived with Mrs. Lipner and survived because of Mrs. j I I Lipner. Mrs. Lipner, in her closing comments, satd, 'Thank you I j for letting me share this with you.'l She said that for many, 1 many, many years, she would tell no one about what she had done. But she shared that with us# and I know that you will take the same pride that I did in her closing comments. She said, 'Thank you for letting me speak. God bless Anericao'' Thank you, Mr. President. Welle my former husband was at the Camp of Dachaug and he saw the horrors, when he Was in the American Army, When they went to liberate the people. And anyone who takes it upon himself to state that they didn't have Nazi death camps and that there was no Holocaust is either deranged or completely forgetful of the fact that they have the right to be here and make whatever statements they want, even though they are so wrong . I salute Senator Berman for that very beautiful storyg and I know there are a 1ot of others like it.

But it was a great loss I for Illinois, because proninent CEOs of major corporations from . ! this state was also on that trip, expandinq opportunity for ! business abroad over in Bosnia, as -- as a representative of this ! I nation. So as the Secretary of Commerce, he was attempting to : expand opportunities for us here in this country. It,s a great ! i loss for America. It's a qreat loss for this nation, because We I I lost one who could deal with everyone, be they Democrat, be they I Republican: and on the State -- taking care of State business in ! I Bosnia, visiting the troops there at the same time, trying to I I rebuild that country with the technology of those corporate I leaders who were with hin on that trip. So it was a great loss. I ! Ee was a very warm indivldual.
