SENATOR GEO-KAR IS

Mr . President and Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, last night we had another epic event - so unusual, that We had the most crowd attending this epic event : the site of the House and Senate annual baseball team r which was being sponso red for us by the Regional Commerce/Growth Associatlon of St. Louls, Relsey Lundyr actlve for lt and to us , and our fo rmer leqislator, Bob Walters, was the -- the umpire . I would like to commend the -- the -- now , cut it outz gentlemen. Anyway, I Would like to commrnd the team membersy and I want to commend the cocaptains and co-coaches, too, Frank Watson and John Cullertonr for a job well done. We won by twelve to nine . However, I would like now to mention the various players that we had . Barack Obama y Who was fleet o f foo t, and he looked good in uniform . Terry Link , the rookle o f the year. John Cullerton , the cocapta in , and he did hit some good ones . Tom Walsh , Who had dropped h is balls and them caught them when it was most important, and therefore, he was the most valuable player. Bob Molaro , who h it a beautiful home run and got us back into the scoring board , after we had nine to nine , to twelve to nine . And he 's the County Boa rd Chairman . Frank Watson , who is very fleet 13 S' 1'A' 1'E U:' ILL 1NU 1b 90TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 40th Legislative Day April 30 , 1997 of foot and ran for Burzynsklz and really crossed those bases fast . Chuy Ga rciar who was sure hands, because he caught some real good ones in the far left field . Carl Hawkinson, who was the only pltcher We had , and he was the winning pitcher. The House had to put three p itchers in there . Dave Syverson, who stretched far enough to catch the ball on first base . Miguel de1 V alle , Who made a great tag at home plate , kept the ball in h is hand , so he got the guy out , when ik was very critical for us. B rad Burzynski, for stnging a beautiful Star-spangled Banner for us . Larry Bomke , Who had most beautlful leqs shorts tha t we 've eve r seen . And Ed Petka z he might have had bad knees, but he had good speed, and he did a good job. Rickey Hendcn finally had a great catch after he dropped his balls before , and he saved -- helped save the game . Geo rge Shadid , who gave us our beautlful caps, and he was a one-fo r-one . And I want to tell you that that Was one of the closest games we ever had . It was nine to zero r and then in , think was the fifth lnning, the House made it nine to nlne. And in the last inning , beautiful catches Were made . Tommy Walsh came through . And want to commend the Senate team for doing such a splendid, splendld job. Congratulations. We got the trophy again , and We had older but more experienced members than the House dld . And there lt goes. Congratulatlons . God bless.

PRESIDING OFFICER (SENATOR WATSON)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR WATSON) Thank you very much , Senator Geo-Raris . And we have with us today the sponsors of the event, and they have been, I believe, for the last six years, the Regional Commerce/Growth Assoctationr out of St. Louis. The RCGA has sponsored the House/senate softball game , and as you know z a1l fifty-nine Senato rs ccntributed to a fund that wl11 be given to charity and and the game ra ises money for charity here in Springfield . Have Kelsey Lundy here , who is the Governmental Affairs Officer for the Reglonal Commerce and Growth Associatlon out of St. Louis. She 's been here in Springfteld a great deal over the last several weeks wo rking on legislation that impacts southwestern Illincis , and We appreciate the work of the RCGA recognizing tha e Illincls is as much a part of the St. Louis region as -- as a qood portlon of Missouri .
