M. Maggie Crotty (D)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR CROTTY) Senator Hunter.

Mattie Hunter (D)

Thank you very much, Madam President. Senate Joint Resolution 3 basically creates the Illinois Great Migration Centennial Commission to work towards the commemoration and celebration of the Great Migration Centennial. And basically, the Great Migration is a historical event in which millions of African Americans moved from the South of -- to Chicago and other northern cities in years between 1916 and 1970. And we’re talking about something like five hundred thousand African Americans actually migrated to Chicago alone. And I will ask for a favorable vote on this bill {sic}. Thank you.

M. Maggie Crotty (D)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR CROTTY) Is there any discussion? Senator Pankau.

Carole Pankau (R)

Thank you, Madam President. To the resolution. I’d like to thank the sponsor for all the work that she did on this. She heard the concerns of some of the members of the committee and there will be no State funds used in this commission. If there are expenses, they will be reimbursed from the private funds that are going to be a part of this commission. And also, any State time and effort by the historical foundation is going to be reimbursed also. So I’d like to thank the sponsor very, very much. Urge an Aye vote on this. And basically say this is something that maybe we should use in these economic times as an example of how we can work and still get things done. Thank you. 42 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 28th Legislative Day 4/11/2011
