Antonio Muñoz (D)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR MUÑOZ) Senators. Senator Maloney, for an introduction.

Edward D. Maloney (D)

Ladies and Gentlemen, if I could have your attention just for one moment for an introduction today. I've -- I've envied my colleagues here who, from time to time, come up and introduce State championship sports teams, but I have the privilege and honor today of introducing the National Champion Saint Xavier Cougars from Saint Xavier University that lies within the heart of my district. And in -- in December of this year, they won the National -- National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Football Championship. The game was played in Rome, Georgia. They defeated Carroll College of Montana, who had won the Championship seven -- seven different times. And I -- I've got to tell you, if you're a football fan, this team is really fun to watch. This is not a -- a -- a three -- three yards and 7 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 79th Legislative Day 2/8/2012 a cloud of dust team. They throw the ball all over the place and it's pretty exciting football. I also would like to introduce Coach Mike Feminis, who was also the NAI -- or, I'm sorry, the American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year. And ninety percent of the players on this team are from the State of Illinois. So it's really everybody's champion. But they are the National Championship Champions and I'd like everyone to please give them a nice round of applause. I'd like -- please acknowledge Coach Feminis. He'd just like to say a few words.

COACH MIKE FEMINIS

(Remarks by Saint Xavier Coach Mike Feminis)

Edward D. Maloney (D)

Thank you, everybody. Thank you.

Antonio Muñoz (D)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR MUÑOZ) Senator Kotowski.

Dan Kotowski (D)

Thank you, Mr. President and Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate. Lech Walesa was the first democratically elected President of Poland after World War II. A Nobel Peace Prize winner, Walesa shepherded his country through the arduous return to a capitalistic economy and laid the foundation for its eventual admission to NATO and the United Nations. He is one of the four leaders generally credited with ending the Communist Eastern Bloc at the end of the Cold War, joining ranks with President Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Walesa's story is truly a profile in courage. He started his adult life as a car mechanic and eventually became an electrician in the Gdansk shipyards. After he witnessed violent government crackdowns by Poland's -- Poland's Communist Party, he became a labor leader and an activist. He was fired for his anti-Communist leadership and forced to earn his living by working temporary jobs. He became Solidarity Chairman of the First National Solidarity Congress in 1981. He was later imprisoned for his democratic political beliefs. In 1990, he was elected President of the Republic of Poland, a position he held until 1995. He oversaw Poland's first completely free parliamentary elections in 1991, successfully negotiated the withdrawal of all Soviet troops from Polish soil and won a substantial reduction in Poland's 16 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 79th Legislative Day 2/8/2012 crippling foreign debts. His legacy as a warrior for democracy and capitalism has won him an important piece in Polish and world history. He has been recognized by organizations that advocate for freedom, for human rights and democracy all over the world. Tomorrow, Lech Walesa will receive the 2012 Lincoln Leadership Prize from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation in recognition of his lifetime of service to democracy and freedom, as well as his great strength of character, individual conscience, and his willingness to accept the responsibilities imposed on him by history and his own conscience - all qualities prized by Illinois' own President Abraham Lincoln. Please join me in proclaiming tomorrow, February 9th, 2012, Lech Walesa Day in the State of Illinois in honoring this extraordinary man.

Antonio Muñoz (D)
