According to the CDT {sic} (CDC), autism affects one in eighty-eight children in the United States, a seventy-eight percent increase from the year 2000. That means that nearly everyone you know most likely knows someone who is affected with autism or has been diagnosed or living with autism disorder. 6 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 103rd Legislative Day 4/18/2012 Although these -- although these statistics are quite alarming, not all cases have a bleak outcome. Today I have with me Laura Pedro, a family friend and my executive assistant in my district office, who has worked in my office for the past thirteen years, along with her son Geordon, who has autism. Geordon’s story is quite amazing. He gives us all hope in the fight to better understand the mystery of autism and the importance of early intervention. Geordon Isaiah White was born in Washington, D.C., on April 21st, 1995. When he was almost two years old, his grandfather, Dr. Donald Pedro, recognized something was different due to his lack of eye contact and verbal communication. After many tests and evaluations, Geordon was diagnosed with persuasive {sic} (pervasive) developmental disorder, and eventually, autism. Due to the importance of early intervention, he has participated in the zero to three program provided by the Chicago Easter Seals and Blue Cap in Blue Island, Illinois, which is located in my district. He's -- he has -- he has been in the Chicago Public School System since the age of three. He now attends the Chicago International Charter School-Ralph Ellison Campus on the South Side of Chicago. He is a junior and will be seventeen this Saturday, and has a grade point average of 3.5 out of a 4 point scale. He was recently inducted into the National Honor Society this past Friday, and I couldn’t be more proud of him for that accomplishment. In addition to -- Geordon is a member of the Upward Bound Program and is looking forward to attending a college of his choice next year. He is a wonderful son, grandson, brother, and a friend to many. Actually, we all have some guests here today because these young people are from across the State of Illinois, and we have members of the Illinois 4-H Legislative Connection. They're actually behind the President up in the -- up in the gallery, behind Madam President there. Twenty-two 4-H members from the Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team and they are -- Speaking for Illinois 4-H program. And they're going to be - - if they haven't -- you haven't already seen 'em around the Capitol, they're going to be visiting your offices throughout the day. They're represented from twelve different counties throughout the State, but they are representing all two hundred thousand plus 4-H participants from all one hundred and two counties from around the State of Illinois. I'd like everybody to welcome them to the Illinois State Senate. They are just an outstanding -- they came up to my office earlier. I spoke to two or three of 'em, and just really outstanding young people who understand what's going on in Springfield here. He enjoys video games and gymnastics, and his favorite subject is recess. The Consul General is relatively new to this post. He was appointed in November of 2011, but has built a distinguished record in public service. He also understands the legislative process. He served in the Australian Parliament in a number of capacities, including as a member and Chair of the Joint Foreign Affairs, Defense and Trade Committee and as a permanent member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. United -- United States Army Specialist Christopher Patterson, of Aurora, Illinois, passed away on January 6th, 2012, while proudly serving his country in Kandahar Province in Afghanistan. We are joined today by Mary, Bob, his mom and dad, and his Marine Corps brother, Carl. And they're with us today in the President's Gallery. Christopher graduated from West Aurora High School, and has -- was continuing his studies in music education at Valparaiso University in Indiana. He was a member of the professional 17 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 103rd Legislative Day 4/18/2012 music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and toured with the school's premiere vocal ensemble, the Chorale. Coming from a strong military family, Chris enlisted with the Indiana National Guard and served as a 12B Combat Engineer with the 713th Engineering Company, the Sappers, based out of the Valparaiso Armory. He didn't have to go to fight terrorism, but he bravely chose to. Every account that I've either read or heard about Christopher at the funeral indicated that Christopher had a gentle and conscientious and loyal spirit. He's much loved and admired and respected by his friends. I would ask Mary, Bob, and Carl to stand up, please. And I would ask the Members of the Senate to welcome and thank them for their family's sacrifice for our country.
