Thank you, Mr. President. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, on this day, I'm honoring champions. I'd like to welcome to the Illinois Senate the High School Boys' Basketball State Champion Wolverines from Simeon Career Academy on the South Side of Chicago. This remarkable team of hardworking and talented young men, led by the coach Robert Smith, has won three consecutive Class 4A State championships; overall, Simeon has claimed six State titles, the most of any school in Illinois -- in Illinois. Coach Smith, who has guided the Wolverines for eight years, teaching them respect and leadership skills both on and off the court, is the first high school coach in Illinois history to win five State championships. I do want to recognize one of these young men in particular - forward -- forward Jabari 2 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 104th Legislative Day 4/19/2012 Parker. Jabari has averaged 20.4 points per game this season and is the nation's top-ranked junior. Like one of Simeon's best-known alumni, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, Jabari was named Illinois Mr. Basketball this year. He is the first player to win the award as a high school junior. Jabari's accomplishments, however, are not limited to the court; they extend to the classroom and the community. With a 3.8 grade point average and a commitment to volunteer work as a youth basketball instructor and with the Salvation Army and his church, he stands as a shining example of a true student athlete who uses his mind, body and soul to the best of his ability. On Saturday, he was honored with the "Rising Star" award from the DuSable Museum. This award recognizes Chicagoans who have made outstanding contributions to -- to society through their careers and through civic engagement. Jabari is also a team player who credits his teammates for his success. Simeon's win over Proviso East for this year's State title was a collective effort in which the young men standing here played a balanced game with a strong defense as well as a successful offense. Please join me in honoring these young people for their achievements and accomplishments, along with their coach, the Head Coach Mr. Robert Smith, and the Assistant Coaches, Maurice Brown and Marion {sic} (Marlo) Finner. The Loyola University Chicago 1963 men's basketball team merits consideration for both the Naismith and College Basketball Hall of Fame for its work on the court and in the civil rights movement on this, the fiftieth- year anniversary of its milestone achievements. Led by two-time All-American Jerry Harkness, the squad captured the hearts of basketball fans around the country by staging one of the most dramatic comebacks in college basketball history in the NCAA title game versus two-time defending champion Cincinnati. Down fifteen points with less than fifteen minutes to play, the Ramblers rallied to defeat the Bearcats on -- in overtime, 60 to 58, and to this day, Loyola remains the only school from the State of Illinois to have won NCAA Division I title in men's basketball. However, the Ramblers' biggest accomplishment may have been the role they played in the civil rights movement. 10 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 104th Legislative Day 4/19/2012 The first NCAA team to start four African-American players, Loyola played one of the biggest NCAA tournament games ever that year and it had nothing to do with the action on the court. During the NCAA regional round, because Loyola's team was integrated, Mississippi State University, MSU, was not allowed to play the contest due to state rules forbidding games against such teams. But MSU snuck out of town under the cover of darkness, and the game of basketball was forever changed on March 15th, 1963. Harkness has said that playing in that game was the highlight of his storied career, and the contest was later set to film in the powerful documentary, "Game of Change". Today, I'd ask this Chamber to send a clear message to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Head Coach George Ireland and the 1963 NCAA National Champion Loyola University Chicago Ramblers belong. It's a group -- the latest class of the Illinois Women in Leadership. You guys may know that this is the group that was originally founded by Loretta Durbin, has such wonderful people involved, as Linda Hawker, who I saw some place running around here, really developing women and trying to get them into elected office -- elected positions. I think we have the best class ever. It's a wonderful group. I'm just going to give you their names and then hopefully you will go and introduce yourselves to them as you have the chance and see them on the Floor.
