"Thank you, Mr. Speaker. This is autism lesson number four. April is Autism Acceptance Month. I love somebody with autism. ASD, autism spectrum disorder, is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects people… how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a developmental disorder because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. So, here's some more facts about autism. Autism isn't bad, and it isn't wrong, but it is a… it is very common for a caregiver to go back and forth in their mind about that before and even after a diagnosis. Autism is not always that different. Most people think of autisms in stereotypes or in extremes, and this leads to them questioning whether a child's autism diagnosis, especially when the individual has strengths and neurotypical characteristics. But most autistic individuals have a multitude of strengths and neurotypical characteristics. We experience this in my own family. My mom's sister, who is much older, told me he probably just needs a good spanking. He's autistic, and he has a hard time regulating himself. Additionally, kids will look and behave differently when they're regulated. When they're calm and they're using their therapies, you can't tell them… they're not much different than other kids, neurotypical kids. So, when they have access to getting their sensory, emotional, and routine needs met, often at home, they may look different when they are dysregulated. So, thank you for listening.
