Tockstein, Lori: "Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to introduce to you the Benton High School special olympian and the classmates of Mr. Mark Franklin. Thank you for having us here today.
"At this time it gives me great pleasure to introduce a special education senior at Benton Consolidated High School, who won both a gold and silver medal at the International Special Olympics at Notre Dame University. Mark is a popular student at Benton High School, where he is manager of both the football and basketball teams. On Saturday, October the 24th, Mayor Charlie Smith, who is here with us today, led a city wide celebration for Mark Franklin on a street which now designated as Mark Franklin Street. This was a first time an American street was named in honor of a special olympian. And the citizens of Benton are very proud of Mark. My special friends, Matt Wynn and David Severn, convinced me to represent the State of Illinois in the International Special Olympics last summer the famous people and fireworks display at these events was unforgettable. Participants, the courage and determination of the participants was really something to see. With the help of my coach, 'Rick Shaw', I was able to win a gold medal in the high jump and a silver medal in the pentathlon for the great State of Illinois. I would like to thank my supporters at home for their encouragement. A few weeks later the great town of Benton honored me by naming a Mark Franklin Street. I would like to thank Mayor Charles Smith, the Franklin Hospital, Jake Seymour and many others for their efforts in this un...unforgettable event.
