Sacha is a Rotary exchange student who is staying in Elgin for the year of 1990 and she's from down under in Queensland, Australia and has been involved in politics for much of her life as she will explain. "Thank you, very much. Well, my name is Sacha Campbell and I'm an exchange student from Australia. I've been in America for nearly four and a half months now and I'm staying until next January. First I would like to thank Jim, very much for bring here for these three days. I have a very keen interest in politics, mainly because my father was elected into the Queensland State Parliament to the House of Representatives in 1983. So my sister and I grew up surrounded by politics and I found it very interesting to...visit the House here in America. I spoke to the Senate yesterday and I found it very interesting, the differences in the Parliament we have in Queensland. 3 STATE OF ILLINOIS 86th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 123rd Legislative Day June 1, 1990 The Australian government is based on the same system, we have the Senate and we have the House of Representatives. But Queensland, my home state is the only state in Australia where we have abolished the Senate, and we only work...and we only work with the House of Representatives. Now the way in which this works out is quiet interesting. The Senate...the Members of the Senate were appointed by the Governor and they consisted of...the landed gentry, they were the rich and powerful businessmen and 'graveners'. So when the Labor Party came to government...whenever the Labor Party tried to put through a Bill, the Senators would not pass it. And so after a few years the labor government decided to appoint fifteen Members into the Senate. Now these fifteen Members were called the suicide squad because Senators that were appointed to Senate by vote of the Senate out of existence. Therefore, they are called the suicide squad. So in Queensland Parliament now only works with the House of Representatives. It's also interesting tonight that in Australia it's compulsory for every single citizen to vote. If people do not vote there then are made to pay a fine and then maybe a jail sentence. Thank you very much."
