Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, on behalf of Senators Carroll, Marovitz and myself, I want to thank Senators Rock, Netsch, Geo-Karks and Dehngelis for joining us this morning at the Days of Remembrance Holocaust Commemoration. I might just take a moment of your time. The message that's delivered every year, durin: this very solemn commemoration of the death of six million Jews and the deaths of millions of non-aews during the Holocaust years of 1933 to 1945, delivers a very important message. Eaeh of us are leaders in our community and in our government. And the Holocaust came about because leaders in our -- in their communities and their government allowed to happen. We had a presentation this morning from a gentleman from the Chicago area who, think, startled many of the people present by his remarks, when he related that he was born in Lithuania, and that the Jews of 12 STATE OF ILLINOIS 86th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 80th Legislative Day April 25# 1990 Lithuania died, were killed, Were massacred, before the Nazis entered Lithuania. I was not aware of that fact. But that was one of the presentations that we were fortunate enough to hear this morning. After We were done with this commemoration ceremony, the television cameras were present, and they asked the Governor and Representative Preston and myself to comment, and wanted to share this fact with you. Apparently in Winnetka, a family has withdrawn their children from the public schools of Winnetka, because Winnetka is instituting what we voted unanimously to do in this Chamber - and the House approved, and the Senators siqned - and that was to teach the Holocaust in our public schools. And the television asked the Governor and us to comment. My comment was that I felt sorry for the children of these parents, that they wouldn't have the opportunity to learn of one of the darkest days of our history. The reporter asked me what my comment would be to those parents, and I said, ''I really can 't give a comment to those parents; feel sorry for them, too.' Ladies and Gentlemen. would like to just conclude by reading an inscription that was on the walls of a cellar in Cologne, Germany, where Jews Were hidden from Nazis. ''I believe in the sun even when it is not shining. believe in love when feeling it not. I believe in God even when He is silent.d' Thank you, Mr. President.
